Broner: When I Lost, People Thought Mayweather Lost

Below are excerpts from Adrien Broner’s Showtime televised interview with Brian Kenny: Regarding his first loss last December to Marcos Maidana… “That’s not the first time I took defeat. It might not be the last time. But God has got something in store for me. I am set for a major comeback. “Maidana did what he was supposed to do. He threw big shots. I was in a hell of a fight. It comes with the territory. That’s boxing. Sometimes you don’t get hit, but sometimes you do. It’s not about that. It’s about how you get up. And I got up and fought to the last.”

Mike Stafford has two relationships with Adrien Broner — he is a father figure who has known Broner since he was a child, and he is the trainer who helped guide that kid as he won world titles in three weight classes. And so after Broner got knocked down twice and lost a unanimous decision to Marcos Maidana this past December, Stafford was split on whether Broner’s desire to seek an immediate rematch was the best choice. Gomez Says Broner-Maidana 2 Could Be in June or July

The rematch between welterweight titleholder Marcos Maidana and Adrien Broner, — once thought to take place in April but since pushed back — might instead end up in June or July, according to Eric Gomez of Golden Boy Promotions. Broner, who lost the title to Maidana in December after getting knocked down twice and dropping a unanimous decision, exercised his option for an immediate rematch. Maidana’s manager, however, told BoxingScene’s Rick Reeno that Maidana needed more time to rest and train, and that Maidana also wanted to be present for the birth of his daughter, who is due in mid-March.

Former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr. believes Adrien Broner (27-1, 22KOs) made a big mistake in rushing to fight such a big puncher like Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31KOs) last December in San Antonio. Broner, a three division former champion, moved up from 135 to 147-pounds last June against Paulie Malignaggi, who is one of the lighter punchers at the weight. Broner struggled to win a twelve round split decision. The tough Argentinian had Broner down twice in the contest and applied a lot of pressure in every round, with numerous punches landing hard on Broner's chin and body.
