Luis Nery: record, next fight and profile →
Figueroa, Nery Compubox Punch Stats - Carson, California - For the WBC super bantamweight title, Brandon Figueroa (22-0-1, 17 KOs) captured more gold by knocking out previously unbeaten Luis Nery (31-1, 24 KOs) in the seventh round.
By Jake Donovan - For the second time in as many tries, Brandon Figueroa turned in a performance to remember on the heels of his brother turning in one to forget. In a career-best effort to date, the 24-year-old Figueroa knocked out Luis Nery in the 7th round to become a legitimate titleholder in the 122-pound division. Their two-belt title fight ended with Figueroa putting Nery down for the count in their Showtime main event Saturday evening at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Luis Nery is one of the rare fighters whose switch to respected trainer Eddy Reynoso didn’t work out. Reynoso prepared Nery for his WBC super bantamweight title fight against Aaron Alameda on September 26. Nery defeated Alameda by unanimous decision and became a world champion in a second division, but that didn’t prevent Nery from returning to Tijuana and reuniting with trainer Ismael Ramirez for his fight against Brandon Figueroa on Saturday night.
The next fight for Brandon Figueroa takes place at a venue that will forever hold a special place in his heart. It was at Dignity Health Sports Park where the unbeaten junior featherweight claimed his first title, winning an interim version of the WBA 122-pound crown in an April 2019 knockout win over Yonfrez Parejo. The feat marked the lone career appearance at the famed Carson, California venue for Figueroa, who makes a triumphant return this weekend in a title unification clash versus two-division and reigning WBC 122-pound titlist Luis Nery (31-0, 24KOs).
So far, the height of Luis Nery’s ring career is also his biggest fall. A cult favorite who built a following as one of the prospects developed, on US airwaves, on the BeIn Sports Espanol Saturday shows, Nery arrived at his first title shot with real buzz. In 2017, Nery unseated one of the best bantamweights of the last twenty years, Japan’s Shinsuke Yamanaka, in four violent rounds for the WBC and lineal 118 lb. crown.
Brandon Figueroa is professional enough to appreciate the road ahead without looking beyond the immediate task at hand. The unbeaten secondary WBA junior featherweight titlist faces his toughest test to date, at least on paper as he meets WBC 122-pound title claimant Luis Nery in a two-belt unification clash. Their bout takes place this Saturday, live on Showtime from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Awaiting the winner is the chance to further unify the division, which will come in a three-belt showdown with WBO titlist Stephen Fulton on September 11.
Luis Nery and Brandon Figueroa are well aware of the rich history of fan-friendly, unforgettable fights at Dignity Health Sports Park. Motivated in part by those memorable battles, the unbeaten 122-pound champions expect to add to that tradition Saturday night. In fact, Nery and Figueroa feel they’ll produce nothing short of a “Fight of the Year” candidate when they square off at the venue once known as Home Depot Center in Carson California.
By Cliff Rold - Since the birth of the modern incarnation of the division in the mid-1970s, it wouldn’t be a stretch to call Jr. featherweight boxing’s preeminent war class. Pioneered into legitimacy by the title reign of the great Wilfredo Gomez, there aren’t many spots on the scale with a deeper pool of blood and guts classics in the last near five decades.
