BoxingScene.com’ Keith Idec recently broke the news that Erickson “The Hammer” Lubin (24-1) will take on Sebastian “The Towering Inferno” Fundora (18-0-1) in a high stakes showdown on April 9th that will broadcast live on Showtime. The fight will take place at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.
The winner will be the WBC super welterweight mandatory challenger for WBC/WBA/IBF champion Jermell Charlo who takes on WBO champion Brian Castaño on May 14th.
Lubin, who is an Orlando native, usually trains in South Florida with his trainer Kevin Cunningham but for this fight they decided to pack up and head to Sin City to get ready for their all-southpaw battle.
“We’re having a tremendous training camp here in Vegas. Lubin versus Fundora is a Fight of The Year type of matchup. Fundora’s a tough out for anybody and comes to fight with a high punch output,” Cunningham told BoxingScene.com.
“I’ve studied hours of Fundora’s fight footage and there’s several defensive flaws that a fighter of Hammer’s caliber will expose. I envision this fight looking like Hagler-Hearns. It won’t go the distance.”
Fundora was last in action in December when he handed Sergio Garcia (33-1) his first career defeat. Prior to that outing, he stopped Jorge Cota in four rounds.
Lubin only had one ring appearance in 2021. He knocked out former unified champion Jeison Rosario (20-3-1) in six rounds in June. In 2020, he also only fought once, defeating Terrell Gausha via unanimous decision.
