It was announced today that on October 17th at the Madison Square Garden in New York, a middleweight unification bout between Gennady Golovkin (who holds the WBA/IBO titles) and David Lemieux (the IBF belt-holder) would be staged. The fight will be distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View.
Tom Loeffler, the managing director of K2 Promotions told BoxingScene.com on Saturday afternoon that negotiations with Golden Boy Promotions, ''started off slow but it ended very quickly. It really came together in the last three days. Madison Square Garden made a huge offer to host this fight. They wanted Gennady back in New York at 'the Mecca of Boxing' and with a match-up with another world champion like David Lemieux.
“The two biggest punchers in the middleweight division – and let me clarify, it'll be at 160 pounds – so it'll be a true middleweight championship fight but I think the fans are going to be the winners in this one. This will be Gennady's first pay-per-view fight. He's been on HBO eight times before and HBO felt with the continued ratings increase that with another champion like Lemieux that this was definitely going to be successful on their pay-per-view platform.”
And they will be pricing this to sell, word is that it will be under $60 retail.
“We don't have the official announcement yet ,on either the ticket pricing or the pay-per-view, but I think, again, we're going to structure this event for the fans. So the fans will be the winner of this fight. They'll get a lot of value out of this pay-per-view, unlike some of the other pay-per-vies that the fans might have been disappointed in.
“We're going to give a lot of action. I don't think with two of the biggest punchers in the middleweight division. I don't think this goes twelve rounds, either way.”
This is an event that will be a co-promotion between K2 and Golden Boy.
“I have to give Oscar De La Hoya a lot of credit, Lemieux and Camille Estephan for staying true to their word. The best will fight the best and this is really the best match-up we could put together,”said Loeffler.
