Liam Walsh: record, next fight and profile →

Hot British talent Liam Walsh will defend his WBO European Lightweight title against former two-time WBO World Champion Scott Harrison on Saturday 20th April at Wembley Arena. The fight will features as chief support on Frank Warren’s big show headlined by Nathan Cleverly’s WBO World Light-Heavyweight title defence against Robin Krasniqi, plus the return of heavyweight Dereck Chisora, live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546). Walsh, who also holds the Commonwealth Super-Featherweight title, is unbeaten in 13 fights and won the WBO European Lightweight crown last July at West Ham United’s Boleyn Ground on the David Haye-Dereck Chisora undercard, halting Italian Domenico Urbano - who had never been stopped before - inside eight rounds.

Liam Walsh has been forced to withdraw from his WBO World Lightweight title challenge against champion Ricky Burns after suffering a back injury in a car accident earlier this week. The unbeaten Cromer star, 26, was due to face Burns on Saturday 15th December at the ExCeL London, but after receiving expert medical advice he has been told to rest and not resume training for four weeks. Burns, from Coatbridge in Scotland, will still headline Frank Warren's big multi-title show with the third defence of his title against a new challenger to be announced shortly.

Ricky Burns admits the promise of high-profile unification fights will prevent him from falling victim to huge underdog Liam Walsh on December 15. Burns make the third defence of his WBO world lightweight title against Walsh at London's ExCel three months after producing a career-best performance against Kevin Mitchell. With a modest 13-0 record - and all but one of them coming in the super-featherweight division - Walsh is being given little chance against a 29-year-old Scot who is in the form of his life.

Ricky Burns faces another world title challenge from an Englishman after European lightweight champion Liam Walsh was named as his next opponent - with a unification fight against Adrien Broner on offer for the winner. Scotland's WBO lightweight champion, who was on top form as he stopped Kevin Mitchell in four rounds last month, will face the unbeaten Walsh at London's Excel on December 15. Promoter Frank Warren has lined up a glamour contest against unbeaten American WBC champion Broner for whoever comes out on top. Walsh stepped up to lightweight in July when he stopped Domenico Urbano in the eighth round at Upton Park to claim the European belt.

By Jake Donovan - Ricky Burns now has an opponent for what will most likely serve as the final big fight card of 2012 in the United Kingdom. The streaking lightweight titlist will face unbeaten Liam Walsh on December 15 atop a huge card at the ExCel Arena in London. "Nothing stirs the sports fans like a good English-Scottish showdown just like my fight against (Kevin) Mitchell did," states Burns, who scored a 4th round knockout of Mitchell last month in Scotland. "[T]he fans are in for a real treat before Christmas with this one."

Former British champion Gary Sykes (22-3, 5 KOs) put forth a strong performance, but it wasn't enough to defeat unbeaten Terry Flannigan (18-0, 4 KOs), who continues to rise by winning the Prizefighter Lightweight Tournament at Olympia in Liverpool, Merseyside. The scores were close, with a split verdict - 29-28 for Flannigan, 29-28 for Sykes and 29-28 for Flannigan. Sykes gets a small measure of redemption after Gary Buckland blew him away in 45 seconds of the first round in a 2010 Prizefighter tournament. Flannigan simply outworked Sykes, not by much, but enough to squeeze out a win on the cards.

Talented middleweight kayo artist Bradley Saunders (3-0, 2 KOs) was forced to go the distance for the first time in his career against durable professional loser Kevin McCauley (10-40-3), who was stopped just five times in his career. Saunders won this one on points.--------------

It has been four years since Cromer's fighting Walsh brothers, Liam, Ryan and Michael, made their pro debuts live on ITV sport. The trio of boxers launched their careers in a blaze of publicity, yet their careers have now slowed to a crawl, or complete stop in the case of former 2007 ABA flyweight titlist Michael.

Liam Walsh was generous in victory after an arduous win over Paul Appleby at the York Hall last Friday night. Walsh secured a tenth-round corner retirement win, he heaped praise on his rival when speaking about the fight with BoxingScene.com.
