After making his "Grand Arrival" to the MGM Hotel & Casino on Monday, WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (28-0) met with a small group of reporters to talk about his upcoming fight against Jesus Ruiz that takes place on Saturday. The fight will serve as the co-featured bout to the Bermane Stiverne-Deontay Wilder main event and will be televised by Showtime.
Santa Cruz began his career in the super flyweight division and captured his first world title as a bantamweight. The Southern California based fighter raised eyebrows when he said that he believes he will fight as a junior welterweight before his career is over.
"We had talked with my dad and my strength and conditioning coach and they believe they can get me up to 140. I have the height and we want to move up little by little. We want to move to 126 then if everything goes good then we will move to 130 and then 135. He knows what to give me with protein shakes and little by little we will get there," Santa Cruz told BoxingScene.com.
The 26-year-old fighter said that his body is filling out and that he feels stronger at super bantamweight than he did at 115 or 122 and that they key is moving up in weight one division at a time.
"I feel stronger physically at this weight (than before). I just need to do it little by little so that I stay strong," Santa Cruz stated.
