NEWARK – Kenneth Sims Jr. beat another undefeated fighter Saturday night. The re-emerging welterweight conquered Keeshawn Williams by unanimous decision in a competitive, entertaining eight-round fight FS1 televised as part of the Vito Mielnicki Jr.-Nicholas DeLomba undercard at Prudential Center. Sims, who upset then-unbeaten Elvis Rodriguez in his previous fight, won by scores of 79-73, 79-73 and 77-75 in a fight that was put together at their weigh-in Friday because both of their opponents fell out of their fights that were scheduled for Saturday night.

Josh Taylor’s victory over Jose Ramirez drew ESPN’s highest viewership for a boxing main event in five months. Nielsen Media Research released numbers Tuesday that showed Taylor-Ramirez was watched by an average of 1,305,000 viewers. A peak audience of 1,673,000 tuned in toward the end of their 12-round, 140-pound title unification fight.
LAS VEGAS – Kenneth Sims Jr. produced the type of win Saturday night that was expected of the accomplished amateur when he turned pro six years ago. Chicago’s Sims upset previously unbeaten junior welterweight prospect Elvis Rodriguez in an eight-rounder ESPN televised as part of the Jose Ramirez-Josh Taylor undercard from The Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. Rodriguez was listed as at least a 25-1 favorite by most Internet sports books, but an aggressive Sims out-boxed and out-punched a supposedly heavier-hitting opponent to win a majority decision.
Kenneth Sims Jr. has taken it all the way back to the beginning in search of a fresh start. A make-or-break fight is in store for the 27-year-old Chicago native, who faces Dominican junior welterweight prospect Elvis Rodriguez (11-0-1, 10KOs). The bout serves as the opener of an ESPN-televised tripleheader this Saturday, live from Virgin Hotels Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Elvis Rodriguez is ready to resume his knockout ways. The last fight for the unbeaten junior welterweight prospect was a matter of getting the win and moving on to the next challenge. Rodriguez pushed past an awkward style challenge in outpointing Luis Alberto Veron, only to watch his eight-fight knockout streak come to a close this past February at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas.
LAS VEGAS – Jose Ramirez was much more animated Friday as he went nose-to-nose with Josh Taylor than he was following their press conference Thursday. Ramirez talked trash back to Taylor after they weighed in at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas for their 140-pound title unification fight Saturday night. Ramirez, of Avenal, California, stepped on the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s scale first at 139.6 pounds. Taylor, of Prestonpans, Scotland, officially weighed the same amount, 139.6 pounds.
Jose “Chon” Zepeda will battle Mexican veteran Pedro Campa in a 10-round junior welterweight battle Saturday, May 22, which will serve as the co-feature to the undisputed junior welterweight world title bout between WBC/WBO champion Jose Ramirez and IBF/WBA champion Josh Taylor.
After going the distance for the first time in his career, Elvis Rodriguez has agreed to face another opponent who hasn’t been knocked out. BoxingScene.com has confirmed that Rodriguez, a hard-hitting junior welterweight prospect from the Dominican Republic, and Kenneth Sims Jr. have been scheduled to meet May 22 on the Jose Ramirez-Josh Taylor undercard at a venue to be determined in Las Vegas. ESPN will televise their eight-rounder as part of a tripleheader.
