Kell Brook: record, next fight and profile →
For the second time in the last couple of months, we have seen a considerable blue chip talent gambled against a veteran their record suggested they might not be ready for. It was a wise gamble when Anthony Joshua toppled Wladimir Klitschko. It was just as wise this past weekend when Errol Spence came on in the second half to break the will of welterweight titlist Kell Brook.
Backed by most of the 27,000 spectators at Bramall Lane in his Sheffield hometown, Brook met Spence on even terms in the first eight rounds. But Brook's left eye began to swell, and he was knocked down in the 10th round. With his left eye almost closed, he took a knee in the 11th and referee Howard Foster waved off the contest as Brook took the full count.
IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence (22-0, 19 KOs) is the fighter of the hour after last Saturday's performance before a hostile crowd of 27,000 at Bramall Lane in Sheffield. Spence traveled over to the champion's backyard and stopped Kell Brook (36-2, 25 KOs) in eleven rounds to pick up the IBF belt.
This past Saturday night, Errol Spence (22-0, 19 KOs) became the IBF welterweight champion when he unseated Kell Brook (36-2, 25 KOs) with an eleven round stoppage before 27,000 hostile fans at Bramall Lane in Sheffield. The fight lived up to hype, but Spence began to take over the later rounds, by dropping Brook in the tenth round and nearly putting him away. Brook rallied and survived, but took a voluntary knee in the eleventh for the full count.
As much as Kell Brook wanted to keep fighting Saturday night, he remembered what his surgeon told him following his last fight. Dr. Mohammed Ali, who repaired Brook’s broken right orbital bone following his fifth-round technical knockout loss to Gennady Golovkin, told Brook he could’ve gone blind in his right eye had he continued in that fight. Once Brook sensed he had suffered a similar injury against Errol Spence Jr., this time around his left eye, he knew he had to quit in their IBF welterweight title fight in Sheffield, England.
Now that he has lost the IBF welterweight title in the ring, not by giving it up, Kell Brook seems more agreeable to the idea of moving up to 154 pounds. The former champion told Sky Sports News on Sunday that his next fight might be the appropriate time to make a permanent move up from 147 pounds. The 31-year-old Brook has fought almost exclusively at welterweight since he made his pro debut in September 2004.
By Tris Dixon - It turns out that it is not just Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee, played by Tom Cruise in A Few Good Men, who can’t handle the truth. Kell Brook can’t either. The former IBF welterweight world champion was dethroned, stripped bare, his left eye puffy and broken and his thousands of previously jovial supporter...
Former WBC cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew was not very happy with the way Kell Brook decided to end his fight with Errol Spence on Saturday night. Bellew was ringside, and watched Brook lose his IBF welterweight title to unbeaten Errol Spence at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane ground.
Former world champion Shawn Porter was ringside on Saturday night at Bramall Lane in Sheffield, and watched Errol Spence (22-0, 19 KOs) stop Kell Brook in eleven rounds to capture the IBF welterweight title. Brook was put down in the tenth and then took a voluntary knee in the eleventh for the full count. It was revealed afterwards that Brook had suffered a fractured left orbital bone.
Amir Khan has proposed that his long-discussed domestic showdown with Kell Brook take place next summer at Bramall Lane. Khan served as an analyst for Sky Sports Box Office’s coverage of Brook’s 11th-round technical knockout loss to Errol Spence Jr. on Saturday night in Sheffield, England. After experiencing the atmosphere in Brook’s hometown, where roughly 27,000 fans attended the Spence-Brook bout at a soccer stadium, Khan thinks taking their all-British battle there makes sense.
