Keith Thurman: record, next fight and profile →
On Tuesday, IBF welterweight king Errol Spence (22-0) held a media workout for his January 20th showdown against former champion Lamont Peterson (35-3-1). Their fight will headline a Showtime Championship Boxing card with Robert Easter defending his IBF lightweight title against Javier Fortuna in the co-feature bout.
At the table there has been no formal offer, but former two-division world champion Jessie Vargas (28-2, 10 KOs) is confident that at some point he will enter the ring to challenge WBC, WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman. And if the fight is made, Vargas believes that he has the tools to pull off the win and even knock Thurman out.
IBF welterweight champion Errol "The Truth" Spence (22-0) held a media workout today in his hometown of Dallas for his upcoming clash against former champion Lamont Peterson (35-3-1). The showdown takes place on January 20th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY and will be televised by Showtime.
Danny Garcia hopes he gets another shot at Keith Thurman at some point. The former WBC welterweight champion just doesn’t sense the feeling is mutual. Garcia thinks Thurman will be content to have edged him by split decision in their 12-round, 147-pound championship unification fight and leave well enough alone.
As one of the best boxing matches Showtime could televise in the foreseeable future, Stephen Espinoza wants Errol Spence Jr.-Keith Thurman to take place as soon as possible. Espinoza, the executive responsible for buying fights for Showtime, is optimistic that their welterweight showdown could take place prior to the end of this year, assuming the undefeated welterweight champions continue winning. He thinks Thurman was just being cautious when the WBA/WBC 147-pound champ said in November that he expects to face Spence sometime in 2019, not this year.
IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence (22-0, 19 KOs) will not allow himself to get fixated on a unification with WBC, WBA champion Keith Thurman (28-0, 22 KOs). Spence wants to unify the division, but finds it discouraging that Thurman is not really interested in fighting him sooner than later. In several interviews, Thurman made it known that a contest with Spence was not something that he envisions taking place in 2018.
Former world champion Barry McGuigan, who is now a veteran promoter, is a very big fan of Terence Crawford (32-0, 23 KOs), who is regarded by some as the top pound for pound fighter in boxing. Crawford has a huge 2017, and there were many who tabbed him as the 'Fighter of The Year' in a very tight race with heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko.
Former multi-division world champion Robert Guerrero, who retired earlier this year after suffering a knockout loss to Omar Figueroa, is now focused on his career as a broadcast analyst. Guerrero took some time to rank the top players in the welterweight division - and he views WBA, WBC champion Keith Thurman as the top dog of the weight class. Thurman dropped and decisioned Guerrero back in March of 2015 in the main event of the very first Premier Boxing Champions televised card on NBC.
Former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi views IBF champion Errol Spence and WBC, WBA champion Keith Thurman as the very best of the welterweight division and wants to seem them collide at some point in 2018. Thurman unified the WBA, WBC titles in March with a twelve round split decision victory over Danny Garcia.
Former world champion Amir Khan (31-4, 19 KOs) has mapped out his plans for 2018. The Bolton boxer has been out of the ring since moving up to a catch-weight of 155-pounds and suffering a brutal knockout loss at the hands of then WBC middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. Their bout headlined the first ever boxing event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
