Shawn Porter became a two-time world welterweight world champion when defeated Danny Garcia via unanimous decision on September 8th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. The highly anticipated match up was for the vacant WBC title and was broadcast by Showtime.
WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (28-0, 22 KOs) is looking forward to returning to the ring. Thurman, 29-years-old, has been out of the ring since winning a close twelve round split decision over Danny Garcia in March of 2017. On May 19, the news broke that Thurman would be out of action for at least six months following surgery on his right elbow - which he says was an issue prior to the win over Garcia.
New York - Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman (28-0, 22 KO’s) has been out of the ring since he defeated Danny Garcia (33-2, 20 KO’s) in March of last year. Thurman says he suffered a shoulder injury within his camp in preparation for Garcia. He was scheduled to return this year but a hand injury kept him out of the ring even further.
NEW YORK – When Errol Spence Jr. saw Keith Thurman on Saturday night, he reminded the inactive welterweight champion that he hasn’t forgot about their fight. “I told Keith Thurman I’ll stop him,” Spence said early Sunday morning. “I said l’ll stop him before the sixth.” Spence and Thurman sat ringside at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where they watched Shawn Porter defeat Danny Garcia

NEW YORK – The Keith Thurman-Danny Garcia fight wasn’t quite as close on Shawn Porter’s scorecard as the judges had it. From Porter’s viewpoint, Thurman “exposed” Garcia’s limitations by pressuring him and then by moving away from him at times. Porter predicted he’ll be able to duplicate Thurman’s success and then some when he faces Garcia on Saturday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn (Showtime; 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT).
The head of the World Boxing Council, Mauricio Sulaiman, said the winner of the upcoming fight between Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter will be obligated to make two mandatory defenses. Porter and Garcia will collide on Saturday night, for the vacant WBC welterweight title, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
The buildup toward Danny Garcia-Shawn Porter has been nothing like the promotion of Garcia’s last welterweight title fight. Angel Garcia, Danny’s father and trainer, has a respectful relationship with Kenny Porter, Shawn’s father and trainer. The elder Garcia also says he learned an invaluable lesson from the drama he caused by repeatedly referring to Keith Thurman as a “n*gga” during the press conference in January 2017 to officially announce their fight.
Amir Khan says he is "definitely" capable of winning another world title as he prepares for his first welterweight fight for more than three years against Samuel Vargas. Khan fought Phil Lo Greco at a catchweight in April but has not competed at 147lbs since overcoming Chris Algieri in May 2015, before his ill-fated step up to middleweight to face Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez a year later.
Welterweight World Champion Keith Thurman has an acute understanding of what it takes to beat Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter. The undefeated, former unified champion edged both fighters in blockbuster matchups and will be watching intently from ringside at Barclays Center as the two face off for the WBC Welterweight World Championship Thurman vacated due to injury.
