Nonito Donaire is targeting huge fights at super flyweight with Kazuto Ioka and Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez - before moving back up to chase bantamweight greatness.

Kazuto Ioka is not without his lucrative options in the loaded junior bantamweight division. Just in case a fight with the top players doesn’t quite work out for the four-division and reigning WBO 115-pound titlist, there remains at least one willing challenger in Andrew Moloney.

By Cliff Rold - This golden era at Jr. bantamweight got its latest chapter on Wednesday. In dominating fashion, 33-year old four-division titlist Kazuto Ioka (29-2, 15 KO) avenged a 2018 loss to now-40-year old four-division titlist Donnie Nietes (43-2-6, 23 KO). Nietes suffered his first loss since 2004 while Ioka notched his fifth defense of the WBO belt at 115 lbs.

Kazuto Ioka gained his revenge while adding to his Hall of Fame resume in the process. The four-division and reigning WBO junior bantamweight titlist turned away the challenge of Philippines’ Donnie Nietes, after earning a landslide unanimous decision. Scores of 120-108, 118-110 and 117-111 were in favor of Ioka during their twelve-round rematch Wednesday evening (local time) on TBS-Japan from Ota-City General Gymnasium in Tokyo.

Donnie Nietes defeated Kazuto Ioka more than three years ago in what remains the most significant win of his storied career. Yet, it’s the former four-division titlist from the Philippines who finds himself as the one with something to prove heading into their awaited rematch.

Andrew Moloney has not given up his quest for a lucrative and career-defining showdown with four-division titlist Kazuto Ioka. The belief is that such a title fight can be kept in play after Ioka’s next defense.

Promoter Richard Schaefer says the “special” Donnie Nietes will chase major unification fights is he regains his world title. Nietes is in Tokyo, Japan to challenge WBO junior bantamweight champion Kazuto Ioka on Wednesday night at the Ota-City Gymnasium.

Kazuto Ioka and Donnie Nietes are ready to run it back. The pair of four-division titlists both made weight for their WBO junior bantamweight title fight, which takes place Wednesday evening (local time) at Ota City General Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan. Ioka weighed 114.86 pounds (52.1 kg) for the rematch, making the mark on the second try after initially weighing 40 grams over the limit during his first attempt less than five minutes prior. Nietes checked in at a fight ready 114.5 pounds (51.9 kg) in a bid to regain the title he previously claimed in a New Year’s Eve 2018 split decision win over Ioka.

Four men have held titles in all four weight classes from strawweight to Jr. bantamweight. Three of them (Roman Gonzalez, Kazuto Ioka, Donnie Nietes) did it in the same generation.

Donnie Nietes will add another chapter to his boxing story if he reclaims the WBO world junior bantamweight title next month. The former four-weight world champion challenges Kazuto Ioka, in Tokyo, on July 13 for the belt he won in 2018, when defeating the Japanese star.
