Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.: record, next fight and profile →
Golden Boy President Eric Gomez makes it clear that his company has a goal of finalizing a September fight between their company star, Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (48-1-1 34 KOs), and IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs).
When the fight was first signed, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya felt that Saul "Canelo" Alvarez would overwhelm Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. After watching footage of Chavez Jr. in camp, and looking at some of his photos, the promoter is very impressed and no longer believes the contest will be a walk in the park.
LOS ANGELES - Former two division world champion Canelo Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) today hosted a media workout at the House of Boxing in San Diego where he showcased strength and speed ahead of the upcoming showdown with Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) set for Saturday, May 6 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, which will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View® beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.
The attorneys for promoter Felix 'Tutico' Zabala of All Star Boxing have filed a motion to garnish the wages of two-division world champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. Last June in a Miami court room, Canelo was cracked with a jury verdict which directed him to $8.5 million to former promoter Zabala.
As much as David Lemieux wants to fight Canelo Alvarez later this year, he is certain Alvarez isn’t in for an easy night May 6. Alvarez is an 8-1 favorite as his Mexican showdown with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. draws near, but Lemieux views Chavez as a very live underdog. The 6-feet-1 Chavez stands about four inches taller than Alvarez and figures to have a significant weight advantage once they enter the ring for their 12-round fight next month at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. believes the rivalry with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has lingered on because Canelo is jealous. Chavez Jr.'s father, former world champion and Hall of Famer Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., is regarded by most as the greatest Mexican fighter of all-time. Because of his famous father, Chavez Jr. was an immediate attraction with the Mexican audience - which is why Chavez Jr. feels Canelo never liked him.
WBO junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) is looking very strong in training camp, according to trainer Eddy Reynoso. The Mexican superstar is training in San Diego for his upcoming HBO Pay-Per-View showdown with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., which takes place on May 6th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez disagrees with his career trainer Nacho Beristain, regarding the issues of keeping Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. at the Otomi Ceremonial Center until April 28th. Chavez Jr. hired Nacho to prepare him for the upcoming showdown with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on May 6th from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight takes place at a catch-weight of 164.5-pounds.
Promoter Oscar De La Hoya believes May 6th’s fight between Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr is “probably the biggest event with two Mexican fighters in history.” The ‘Golden Boy’ represents Alvarez and believes the fight will be bigger than when he rematched Chavez Sr back in 1998. “We haven't had a Mexican showdown on Cinco de Mayo weekend in a very, very long time. And the demand has been incredible. I haven't seen anything like it since Barrera vs. Morales; since De La Hoya vs. Chavez Sr. This is going to be an incredible weekend for all boxing fans
Angel "Memo" Heredia, the strength and conditioning coach of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., is aiming to have his boxer arrive to next month's fight at 182-pounds once he steps in the ring - and he believes opponent Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will be at last 185-pounds.
