Daniel Jacobs was so depleted during fight weeks in recent years, he’s not even sure how he was able to squeeze down to the middleweight limit of 160 pounds. That’s not at all the case this week as the former IBF and WBA middleweight champion comfortably comes down to the super middleweight maximum for the first time in 8½ years. Brooklyn’s Jacobs decided to move up eight pounds following his 12-round, unanimous-decision loss to Canelo Alvarez in their middleweight title unification match May 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Fareed Samad has known Daniel Jacobs ever since the Brooklyn-bred boxer was 15-years-old, but their relationship kicked into second gear when they rekindled their friendship in January. The reunion came at a time when Jacobs was about to prepare for the fight of his life against Canelo Alvarez, and begin drifting away from longtime trainer Andre Rozier.
Daniel Jacobs enters a new chapter in his career tomorrow night and in the latest episode of ‘Born Fighter’ says his early sacrifices as a teenager led to him becoming a two-time World champion hunting two-weight glory, starting with his debut at 168lbs against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr at the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona on Friday night, live on DAZN on US and Sky Sports in the UK.

Technically, everybody made weight in Phoenix. Daniel Jacobs and Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. both came within the modified contracted limit for Friday's DAZN-streamed headliner live from Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona. Their originally scheduled super middleweight contest has since been altered to a maximum of 173 pounds to benefit Chavez Jr., who has once again struggled to honor a contracted limit.
Two days after securing a huge victory in the courtroom, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fell prey to the toughest opponent of his career—the scale. A currently scheduled non-title fight between the second-generation boxer and Brooklyn’s Daniel Jacobs will now take place at a modified catchweight of 173 pounds. An agreement was reached between the pair of former middleweight titlists—which includes an undisclosed settlement payable to Jacobs—after it was revealed that Chavez Jr. would be unable to comply with the previous contracted limit of 168 pounds.
Former WBC middleweight champion Julio César Chávez Jr. is ready for what he calls the fight of his life, scheduled for this Friday in Phoenix, Arizona. He says that in order to get mentally ready, he has the attitude of 'Kill or Die' when he enters the ring, for a contest agreed up at the super middleweight limit of 168-pounds, against fellow former champion Daniel Jacobs.
WBA super middleweight champion Callum Smith will be ringside to watch the scheduled clash between Daniel Jacobs and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., according to Sky Sports. Jacobs vs. Chavez Jr. takes place on Saturday night in Phoenix, Arizona. Smith will be there for two reasons - to scout the main event, and to support his older brother, former world champion Liam Smith, who faces Roberto Garcia on the undercard.
As if not having to shed eight extra pounds wasn’t enough of a relief for Daniel Jacobs, so too was the news he received Tuesday afternoon. For weeks, there has existed the concern that Mexico’s Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (51-3-1, 33KOs) would not be cleared to go through with this weekend’s scheduled fight at Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona. The second-generation boxer was embroiled in a lengthy court battle with the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) over a temporary suspension issued nearly two months ago, only to obtain a Temporary Restraining Order which permits him to proceed with the clash of former middleweight titlists (Friday, DAZN, 7:00pm ET).
