Before the going gets tough inside the ring when Juergen Braehmer defends his WBA Light Heavyweight Championship against Roberto Bolonti on June 7, some hard rock will take center stage. Newcomers “Blues Pills” are going to perform their hit single “Devil Man” at the Sport- und Kongresshalle Schwerin, Germany to get fight fans in the right mood for the local hero’s homecoming bout. Moreover, Braehmer likes the song: “I love some hard riffs to tune up myself for a fight and that’s what I get.”

Juergen Braehmer would love nothing more to embrace the thought of his next title defense taking place in his hometown of Schwerin, Germany. The 35-year old heads home for a June 7 light heavyweight title fight with Argentina's Roberto Bolonti. While visions of familiar surroundings and adoring local fans serve as a picturesque backdrop, Braehmer is instead forced to endure verbal challenges recently dropped by his challenger. Credit goes to Bolonti (35-2, 24KO) for showing no fear in his second trip outside of his native Argentina. The 35-year old challenger openly questioned how much Braehmer has left in the tank, despite the fact that the defending champion is a mere three months older. "Both of us might be 35 years of age, but he is far more battle-worn than I am," Bolonti recently insisted. "I am simply fresher and not depleted like him." Braehmer is all for smack talk, but is curious from where Bolonti obtains his information and forms his opinion. "Maybe he did not watch my last fights," Braehmer (43-2, 32KO) wonders. "My last real war inside a ring is so long ago, I cannot even remember it. However, I can keep this delusion on his mind. I will make him pay come fight night and it will not be cheap."

WBA "regular" light heavy champ Juergen Braehmer defends the title on June 7 in Schwerin against an opponent still to announced. A yet to be confirmed rumor says he will take on unranked Argentinian Roberto Feliciano Bolonti. There will be a press conference on Monday (May 12) where the rumor most likely will be confirmed or denied. Also participating in this press conference are WBO Youth super middleweight titleholder Tyron Zeuge, WBO Youth ruler at cruiserweight Noel Gevor and light heavyweight Enrico Koelling so it must be a safe bet that these three will be featured on the undercard.

I’m very tempted to invest in the 9-2 odds that bookmakers are offering on Enzo Maccarinelli becoming Wales’ only ever two weight world champion. Tonight the 33 year old former WBO cruiserweight king from Swansea meets veteran German Juergen Braehmer for the WBA light-heavyweight title at Rostock on Germany’s Baltic coast. BoxNation televise live. Victory would establish ‘Big Macc’ as the first Brit to win a second world title by dropping down a weight, since Cornishman Ruby Bob Fitzsimmons in 1903. It is impossible not to like the amiable Welsh-Italian who I’ve been involved with almost from the onset of his pro career fifteen years ago.

Stadthalle, Rostock, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany - There are fights which everyone knows are going to last the distance long before the opening bell. There are fights where everyone knows they won't go past the midway point. And then there are those which are expected to end early only to go all way to the final bell. For a while it looked like the WBA light heavyweight showdown between "regular" champion Juergen Braehmer and his famed opponent Enzo Maccarinelli would be of that kind, but it ended prematurely before the mid-point due to the completely shut right eye of the challenger.

By Jake Donovan - Dating back to Sergey Kovalev’s most recent ring performance in late March, there is a lot of activity at the top level of the light heavyweight division in a span of just under two months. Kovalev is fresh off of a dominant knockout performance over Cedric Agnew. Bernard Hopkins and Beibut Shumenov are set to square off in an alphabet unification bout on April 19. The winner is likely next in line for a crack at lineal light heavyweight king Adonis Stevenson, providing he gets past Andrzej Fonfara in May. And then there’s Juergen Braehmer. The 35-year old has been steadily climbing the light heavyweight ranks, but still managing to fly under the radar. Part of that comes from fighting exclusively out of his native Germany, which leaves him largely out of the global spotlight currently enjoyed by his aforementioned divisional peers. Steps are being taken to change all of that. A career-best win came in his last fight, a dominant unanimous decision over Marcus Oliveira in their vacant title fight last December. The opportunity came due to the inactivity of Shumenov, although – ironically- both wound up fighting for different variations of the same title on the same night. The win over Oliveira was considered a minor upset though a win that makes sense in retrospect. Now comes the fun part, where Braehmer gets to bring some much needed notoriety to his career. His first title defense comes this Saturday, as he faces former cruiserweight champ Enzo Maccarinelli in Rostock, Germany.
