A middleweight prospect from Floyd Mayweather’s hometown remained undefeated Saturday night in Detroit.
Grand Rapids’ Joseph Hicks was too fast, strong and accurate against Antonio Todd throughout their eight-round bout on the Claressa Shields-Maricela Cornejo undercard at Little Caesars Arena. Hicks outlanded the durable Todd in every round and shut out Todd on all three scorecards to win a unanimous decision (80-72, 80-72, 80-72).
The 29-year-old Hicks, who qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics, improved to 7-0 and went the distance for just the second time as a pro. Atlanta’s Todd (14-8, 8 KOs, 1 NC) has lost three of his past four fights.
The crowd got restless and booed during the eighth round, but Hicks couldn’t put Todd away before the final bell sounded.
A right-left combination by Hicks connected just after the midway mark of the seventh round. Hicks caught Todd with a left hook just before the seventh round ended.
Hicks hit Todd with a right, a left hook and another right several seconds before the sixth round ended. A chopping right hand by Hicks connected just before the midway mark of the sixth round.
Hicks rocked Todd with a right hand that landed almost two minutes into the fifth round and quickly followed up with a left hook that moved Todd into the ropes.
Todd connected with a right hand with just over 35 seconds remaining in a fourth round that Hicks mostly controlled. Todd went down with 1:18 to go in the fourth round, but it was from an obvious push by Hicks.
Back-to-back right hands by Hicks backed Todd into the ropes with just over 20 seconds to go in the third round. Hicks drilled Todd with a right hand that knocked Todd backward with just over a minute on the clock in the third round.
Hicks connected with a left to the body and then a right-left combination to Todd’s head with about 20 seconds remaining in the first round. Hicks then rocked Todd with a right hand that landed with just under 10 seconds on the clock in the opening round.
