Jose Valenzuela: record, next fight and profile →

By Keith Idec - No one saw it coming. No one, that is, other than Brian Mendoza. The junior middleweight contender was well aware that Sebastian Fundora’s defensive deficiencies made the 6-foot-6 southpaw susceptible to left hooks. Though undoubtedly down on the scorecards entering the seventh round April 8 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, Mendoza realized that if he could connect cleanly with one of his left hooks that he could change the course of their 12-round fight for Fundora’s WBC interim super welterweight title.

If you looked up the word bravado in the dictionary, you're likely to find the name Chris Colbert next to it. The brazen New Yorker's words may come across as hubris-laden but Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela saw right through his facade.

Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela was apoplectic when he was given the first results. After going 10 hard-fought rounds with Chris Colbert a few months prior, the 24-year-old believed he did more than enough to earn the victory. He was wrong.

Sometimes, when things are going your way, you can get ahead of yourself. Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela can admit that hubris began seeping into his bloodstream with each highlight-reel-worthy knockout.

Gary Russell Jr. has never been a fan of Chris Colbert. The Brooklyn native, from his point of view, talks entirely too much trash and seldom backs it up in the ring. After watching Colbert come up woefully short at the hands of Hector Luis Garcia in 2022, Russell wanted to see how he bounced back.

Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela was a hot-shot lightweight prospect before Edwin De Los Santos got his hands on him. In September of 2022, both men hit the canvas in the second round. With De Los Santos having his legs underneath him a bit more, he sent Valenzuela to the pavement once more in the third before closing the show just a few seconds later.

Now that he has violently avenged his close loss to Chris Colbert, Jose Valenzuela wants to fight one of boxing’s biggest stars. The 24-year-old lightweight contender called for a showdown with Gervonta Davis moments after his highlight-reel
