Former WBC and EBU featherweight champion José Legra was admitted to the hospital earlier this month after being diagnosed with COVID-19 but the 77-year old is now reported to be doing better, writes Espabox.

Legra was one of the many Cubans that fled the country when Castro took over and after a few years in Mexico he settled in Spain, where he was very popular.  He won the EBU title the first time in 1967 and the WBC crown in 1968 by beating Howard Winstone but lost the title to Johnny Famechon the year after.

Legra won the EBU belt a second time and this time held on to it until there was another WBC title shot on the horizon and he beat Clemente Sanchez in1972 for a second reign as world champ before losing to Brazilian great Eder Jofre.

Jose Legra retired in 1973 after a loss in Nicaragua to Alexis Arguello and boxrec list his record as 129-11-4.

At the same time Espabox reports the death of former Spanish champ Miguel Calderin, 83 years old.  Calderin fought professionally between 1958 and 1966 compiling a record of 41-29-9 and among the guys he lost to we find guys like Jose Legra, Pedro Carrasco and Manolo Calvo.  In 1992 Calderin had a street named after him in his hometown of Telde on the Canary Islands.
