By Keith Idec - NEW YORK – Danny Garcia handled his new weight class and Jose Benavidez Jr. just fine Saturday night. Danny Garcia has heard and read comparable criticism countless times regarding his move to the 154-pound division. Cynics question Garcia’s potential as a junior middleweight because they think the former 140-pound and 147-pound champion is too small for that division. Garcia wasn’t considered a big welterweight, but the Philadelphia native feels completely comfortable as he moves toward his 154-pound debut against Jose Benavidez Jr. on Saturday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
NEW YORK – Angel Garcia again questioned Jose Benavidez Jr.’s skill level Thursday. Danny Garcia’s father and trainer told Benavidez that the former welterweight contender “got no skills, papa” during a press conference at Barclays Center to promote the Garcia-Benavidez card Saturday night in Brooklyn. Angel Garcia also attacked Benavidez’s level of opposition.
NEW YORK – Jose Benavidez Jr. feels more confident in his once-unreliable right leg than he did before his last fight. Benavidez became more open to exercises and treatments that have helped rebuild strength in a leg that was damaged during an unsolved shooting in August 2016. The Phoenix native notoriously favored his right leg during the later rounds of his 12th-round, technical-knockout loss to unbeaten WBO welterweight champ Terence Crawford in October 2018, but Benavidez is certain it won’t hurt his cause when he encounters Danny Garcia on Saturday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Danny Garcia believes he has another championship run left in his 34-year-old body. Garcia will attempt to start proving that when he ends a 19-month layoff and makes his debut in the 154-pound division versus Jose Benavidez Jr. on Saturday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. If the heavily favored Philadelphia native beats Benavidez, he expects to get a higher-profile junior middleweight assignment next.
