Jose Benavidez Jr.: record, next fight and profile →
Jermall Charlo was talking a big game before his big gaffe on the scale Friday when he weighed in 3.4 pounds more than the 163-pound contracted limit against Jose Benavidez Jr.
Jose Benavidez Sr. wasn’t the least bit surprised that Jermall Charlo came in overweight Friday morning for a 10-round, non-title fight against his son Saturday night.

Jermall Charlo either had a healthy helping of food during Thanksgiving week or his lack of preparation following a 29-month layoff contributed to him missing weight Friday for his Saturday night bout against Jose Benavidez Jr.
LAS VEGAS – Unlike Jermall Charlo, David Benavidez and Demetrius Andrade met their contractual obligations Friday morning by making weight for their 12-round, 168-pound title fight Saturday night.
LAS VEGAS – Jermall Charlo apparently took what will officially be his super middleweight debut entirely too literally. The WBC middleweight champion weighed in Friday morning at 166.4 pounds, 3.4 pounds above the contracted catch weight of 163 pounds, for his 10-round, non-title fight against Jose Benavidez Jr. on Saturday night. Benavidez officially weighed 161.2 pounds, well below the limit for their Showtime Pay-Per-View co-feature.
By Keith Idec – Ronnie Shields was beyond concerned. Jermall Charlo’s longtime trainer knew that the WBC middleweight champion needed some guidance while he was trying to work through the mental health issues that contributed to this lengthy layoff. That direction had to come, the way Shields saw the situation, from an iconic boxer that Charlo admires and respects.
LAS VEGAS – The only opponent Jose Benavidez Jr. has knocked out in the past five years was a journeyman who took a 36-15 record into their middleweight match three months ago.
Jermall Charlo was an afterthought over the last few years. The current WBC middleweight champ has been sequestered on the sidelines due to a nagging back injury but more importantly, personal issues.
