Burton-on-Trent's Jonjo Finnegan is in intensive care after undergoing brain surgery following Friday night's sixth-round stoppage defeat to Ryan Clark for the International Masters super middleweight title.
The onsite medical team began working on Finnegan immediately after his defeat and the boxer is now in a "stable but serious condition". Doctors at Nottingham's Queens Medical centre are going to take him off sedation today according to his brother, Frank Finnegan, who posted the latest update on Twitter, in order to attempt to wake Jonjo up and gauge his condition.
The 32-year-old former Midland ABA champion was stopped at 0:34 of the sixth stanza. It was Clark's first defence of the title he won with a eighth-round TKO of Finnegan in April of this year. Finnegan held the same title himself in 2010, scoring a 10-threes decision win over Dean Walker to net the belt, but he went on to lose four of his next five, all by stoppage, and knew he had to gain revenge over Clark, 22, in order to get his career back on track.
Finnegan, 14-9-3 (no KOs), will no doubt brong the same stiff resolve and heart to his latest fight as he brought when battling with Clark, 4-53-4 (2), for the Masters belt. BoxingScene wishes him a swift and full recovery.
