Bill Emes and other members of the media catch up with heavyweight Johnathan Banks to discuss his upcoming fight with undefeated rising star Seth Mitchell.

The weights are in for Saturday's HBO televised doubleheader at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. In the main event, Antonio DeMarco will defend his WBC lightweight championship against undefeated rising superstar Adrien Broner. Both fighters weighed in at 134.5-pounds.

Johnathon Banks doesn’t dispute that these past few weeks have taken quite an emotional toll on him. That was to be expected, considering the impact Emanuel Steward had on his personal and professional lives. One of the countless things the late trainer taught Banks, however, was that, barring a prohibitive injury, the show must go on. Banks (28-1-1, 20 KOs) fully understands that he must channel all the raw emotion lingering from Steward’s death Oct. 25 when he steps into the ring Saturday night to fight Seth Mitchell (25-0-1, 19 KOs) at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Detroit’s Banks can significantly enhance his status in the heavyweight division by beating the former Michigan State linebacker in their scheduled 12-rounder, and he realizes it isn’t an opportunity he can afford to waste.

It was barely a year ago when the industry at large was still trying to determine whether or not Seth Mitchell is for real. A breakthrough performance came in his two-round blitzing of Timur Ibragimov, one that took place both in his home region of Washington D.C. (Mitchell is from nearby Brandywine, MD) and on cable giant HBO. Mitchell instantly became the de facto leader for the resurgence of the American heavyweight fight scene. Fast forward to a year later, as the unbeaten contender is now being groomed for a future title shot.

Heavyweight contender Johnathon Banks, who now trains WBO/IBO/WBA/IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko, was shocked that Mariusz Wach took so much punishement and lasted the entire twelve rounds on Saturday night in Hamburg. The Polish giant showed a giant chin, filled with iron, as he took every punch possible punch from Wladimir and never once was he seriously hurt.

Wladimir Klitschko’s choice to replace the late Emanuel Steward definitely was unconventional. The dominant heavyweight champion picked an active heavyweight who could thrust himself into championship contention by beating Seth Mitchell on Nov. 17 in Atlantic City. But Klitschko knew the moment he found out Steward was terminally ill earlier this year that Johnathon Banks would be his head trainer if Steward was unable to continue in that role. “I knew from the beginning that it was going to be Johnathon Banks,” Klitschko said as he promoted his fight Saturday in Hamburg, Germany, against Poland’s Mariusz Wach. “The man has learned a lot from Emanuel Steward. I met them both on the same day over nine years ago. Johnathon has been learning a lot from the Kronk [Gym] spirit.”

Clinton, Maryland - Undefeated NABO Heavyweight Champion Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell held an open workout at The Dream Team Boxing Gym in Clinton, Maryland today as Mitchell prepares to face top contender Johnathon Banks on Saturday, November 17 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Seth Mitchell, NABO Heavyweight Champion "It would mean a lot to become heavyweight world champion. It remains to be seen, but I am definitely working hard toward that goal. I'm not trying to underestimate anybody, but I am just trying to stay focused and have tunnel vision toward that goal.

Barely a day elapsed from the time of Emanuel Steward’s passing when a considerable piece of his legacy was already being stripped away. “I saw a picture of the Kronk Gym, which has been destroyed. It made me really sad to see what happened,” noted Wladimir Klitschko, who was away in training camp for this weekend’s fight against Marius Wach at the time of Steward’s passing late last month. “Kronk Gym has existed for a long time and it will continue to exist. I will do my dedication to that.”
