Jessie Vargas has advised BoxingScene.com that he will now be training under the watchful eyes of Hall of Fame coach Freddie Roach. The former two-division champion previously was trained by Mike McCallum and before that worked with Roy Jones, Erik Morales and others.
The Las Vegas based fighter will train at Roach's famed Wild Card Gym and believes that it will be benefit him to train away from the comforts of home.
"I’m looking forward to working under the guidance of Freddie Roach. He’s a great trainer with plenty of experience and I feel that he’s going to bring out the best in me. It also helps that I will be training away from my hometown. This decision was a team decision which included my adviser Guadalupe Valencia, my father Jose, and myself. We all feel it’s a great decision which I will benefit from," Vargas told BoxingScene.com.
Roach's stable of fighters includes Manny Pacquiao, Alberto Machado, and several other fighters.
Vargas fought twice in 2018 with both fights ending in a draw. In April he fought Adrien Broner to a majority draw. He followed that up with another majority draw against Thomas Dulorme in October.
He previously told BoxingScene.com that he was targeting April 6th as his return date and he reiterated his desire to face Kell Brook.
