The career of Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez appeared to be going according to plan. Through 14 pro bouts, his record stood spotless. As he continued to make his way up the flyweight leaderboards, the San Antonio native knew good and well that a world title opportunity was nearing. Nevertheless, while he would, in fact, land his first crack at a golden trinket in his very next fight, he would be forced to move up in weight.
Despite drawing dubious looks, Rodriguez (16-0, 11 KOs) easily dismantled Carlos Cuadras earlier this year, nabbing the WBC super flyweight title in the process. For an encore, Rodriguez took on another top contender. This time, in the form of previous belt holder, Srisaket Sor Rungvisai.
A gung-ho Rodriguez made quick work of his man, stopping him in the eighth round. With back-to-back wins over a pair of elite 118-pounders, Rodriguez believes that his name is starting to gain worldwide recognition.
“To me, every fighter wants to be on the pound-for-pound list," said Rodriguez to 210 BoxingTv. "For me to accomplish that, that would be a big dream come true. I believe I’m on my way to do that.”
In an effort to solidify his placement amongst the best of the best, Rodriguez will attempt to mow down his next opponent, Israel Gonzalez. The two will officially square off in the co-main event on September 17th, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Though pegged as a sizable underdog, Gonzalez (28-4-1, 11 KOs) has proved, if nothing else, to be durable. With only one stoppage defeat plastered on his record, Gonzalez has pushed several notable names to their limit, including former multiple division champion, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez.
Having done his homework, Rodriguez admits his upcoming opponent should be lauded for his heart and courage. However, regardless of his ostensibly granite chin, Rodriguez is overwhelmingly confident in his ability to dish out an unbearable beating to Gonzalez on the night.
“I do know that he’s a tough fighter," said Rodriguez of Gonzalez. "He took Chocolatito the 12 rounds but I’m at the top of my game right now. I’m more confident than ever. I believe I’ll be able to make a statement and get him out of there early.”
