Takam ended Week 5 inside the MGM Grand "Bubble" with a 10-round unanimous decision over Jerry Forrest by scores of 98-92, 97-93 and 96-94. A former world title challenger and 2004 Olympian, Takam notched his fourth consecutive win following back-to-back defeats at the hands of Anthony Joshua and Derek Chisora.
By Jake Donovan - Carlos Takam physically suffered more than he bargained for in taking a short-notice assignment, but one where his career will benefit moving forward. The 39-year Cameroonian heavyweight prevailed via unanimous decision over Jerry Forrest in their 10-round main event Thursday evening at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jerry Forrest is glad Jarrell Miller got caught. But even if the controversial heavyweight contender would’ve slipped past the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s testing for performance-enhancing drugs, Forrest is confident he would’ve beaten Miller anyway Thursday night. Forrest’s fight with Miller was scrapped June 27, when it was revealed Miller failed another PED test last month (https://www.boxingscene.com/jarrell-miller-tests-fails-another-ped-test-out-july-9-fight-with-jerry-forrest--149807).
Jerry Forrest recognizes that Carlos Takam has faced a much higher level of opposition than him. The left-handed heavyweight has determined, though, that he has too much boxing ability for the aggressive veteran. Forrest is confident he is plenty equipped to deal with Takam’s pressure and record the biggest victory of his career in their 10-round main event Thursday night in Las Vegas.
Carlos Takam has occupied an even more imposing position than this. The veteran heavyweight from Cameroon took a tougher fight than what awaits him Thursday night on about 10 days’ notice in October 2017. Takam performed well enough in that 10th-round, technical-knockout loss to then-unbeaten champion Anthony Joshua to make him completely comfortable accepting this 10-rounder versus Jerry Forrest with the same small amount of time to prepare.
Jerry Forrest believes he has won 20 straight fights entering his televised main event versus Carlos Takam on Thursday night. Forrest lost a 10-round split decision to Jermaine Franklin last July 12, but the veteran heavyweight thinks those that watched their fight know he deserved to win. Judge Hunter Walton scored that fight 96-95 for Forrest, but he was overruled by judges Alan Krebs and Tim Wood, both of whom scored it 97-93 for Franklin.
By Cliff Rold - Thursday night, we get a heavyweight main event born of circumstance. 32-year old Jerry Forrest (26-3, 20 KO) was supposed to face a returning Jarrell Miller. Miller won’t be returning after all. Not Thursday (ESPN, 8 PM EST). Not for a while. In steps 39-year old former title challenger Carlos Takam (38-5-1, 28 KO) as the late replacement. While the ESPN...
