Promoter: Fortuna Ready To Fight Haney For TItle, Pretty Sure Ryan Garcia Has Other Plans

Javier Fortuna doesn’t intend to allow any more time than necessary to pass by in waiting out his overdue title shot. The former secondary 130-pound titlist is one of two mandatory challengers in waiting for WBC lightweight titlist Devin Haney. Ryan Garcia (21-0, 18KOs) raced to the head of the line, following a 7th round knockout of England’s Luke Campbell in a star-making performance on Jan. 2nd in Dallas, Texas.

Devin Haney can look forward to a busy 2021 campaign, though not one which will necessarily satisfy his desire to clean out the lightweight division. Now that the 22-year old Las Vegas native is back to being recognized by the World Boxing Council (WBC) as its true lightweight champion, with that honor will come mandatory obligations. Haney’s next ordered fight will be versus the winner of the January 2 interim title fight between Ryan Garcia (20-0, 17KOs) and former two-time challenger Luke Campbell (20-3, 16KOs). After that will come a second mandatory versus Javier Fortuna, whom Haney was ordered to face more than a year ago and remains on the hook to do so in 2021.

There is plenty on the growing to-do list for Javier Fortuna to accomplish in 2021. Not among those items, is waiting any longer than necessary for a title shot that should have come long ago. The 30-year old southpaw from La Romana, Dominican Republic picked up his third straight victory with a 6th round stoppage of Tijuana’s Antonio Lozada this past Saturday at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The fight came as a consolation to an owed title shot which has yet to materialize, with Fortuna (36-2-1, 25KOs) serving as the mandatory challenger to WBC lightweight titlist Devin Haney (25-0, 15KOs).

Javier Fortuna has spent all of 2020 expecting to fight for a title or at least in a scenario that would leave him next line. The stakes weren’t quite there in the fight he ultimately, although that never stopped the southpaw from performing at a championship level. Fortuna negated a near 7" height and 5 1/2" reach disadvantage against the 6'1" Antonio Lozada to overwhelm the Tijuana inside of six rounds Saturday evening from Staples Center in Los Angeles. Lozada was floored in round one and outgunned over the course of their lightweight scrap before referee Gerald White was forced to stop the contest at 2:34 of round six in their PBC on FS1 main event.
