Sampson Lewkowicz, promoter for former champion Javier Fortuna, has made it clear that he will not allow a fight between Devin Haney and Luke Campbell to take place. Last year, Haney became the 'champion in recess' after undergoing surgery for an injury.
A clash between Devin Haney and Luke Campbell could be among the first fights staged in the United States by Matchroom after the coronavirus pandemic. Eddie Hearn is eyeing up the match for Haney’s WBC lightweight title for one of his first behind-closed-doors shows in August or September.
Sampson Boxing proudly announces the re-signing of two-time former world champion Javier “El Abejon” Fortuna to a promotional contract. World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman claims Luke Campbell has not been robbed of the opportunity to fight for the full WBC lightweight title. Campbell was scheduled to fight Javier Fortuna for the vacant WBC belt. The belt become vacant after Devin Haney was named champion-in-recess in December, after suffering a shoulder injury that left him unable to defend the title.
The moment he’s given a firm fight date, Luke Campbell promises to be ready go within a few weeks’ notice. The 2012 Olympic Gold medalist and two-time title challenger from Hull, England was due to take a third swing at a lightweight crown prior to the sport shutting down in the wake of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. With it came an indefinite postponement for his vacant interim-title fight versus former two-division titlist Javier Fortuna (35-2-1, 24KOs), which was to have taken place April 17 live on DAZN from MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland.
A rough week for Devin Haney just became much brighter. The 21-year old lightweight was successful in his filed appeal to have his World Boxing Council (WBC) title reign restored. The news was confirmed by the sanctioning body, whose Board of Governors voted in favor to reinstate Haney as its champion.
Olympic gold medal winner Luke Campbell is adamant that his previously ordered bout with Javier Fortuna should still proceed for the vacant WBC lightweight title. The belt became vacant when the World Boxing Council named Devin Haney a 'champion in recess' - due to a shoulder injury that required surgery.
Promoter Sampson Lewkowicz is issuing the following statement regarding Devin Haney’s petition to face number one contender Javier Fortuna immediately when boxing resumes. Last December, Haney underwent shoulder surgery, which prompted the WBC to designate him a "champion in recess" during his recovery and order a fight between their top two contenders, the Dominican Republic’s Javier Fortuna and England’s Luke Campbell, for the vacant lightweight championship.
Devin Haney hopes it won’t be necessary to wait for Javier Fortuna to face Luke Campbell before he gets a shot to fight for the WBC lightweight title again. The WBC ordered a Fortuna-Campbell clash while Haney recovered from shoulder surgery Haney underwent in December. The Dominican Republic’s Fortuna, the WBC’s number one lightweight contender, and England’s Campbell, its second-ranked challenger, were supposed to fight for the vacant WBC lightweight title April 17 at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. That fight was postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus crisis.
A purse bid for the vacant WBC lightweight title was called off in January when the handlers for Luke Campbell and Javier Fortuna agreed to terms to make the fight. Campbell is represented by Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing while Fortuna is handled by Sampson Lewkowicz.
