A few days ago, BoxingScene.com reported that junior middleweight contender James Kirkland had been arrested for assault in Austin, Texas. The boxer was taken to the Travis County Jail and held on $5,000 bail.

According to official police documents obtained by BoxingScene.com, on June 15th there was an incident between Kirkland and his girlfriend of two years, Frances Diane Campbell. The two of them were hanging out with friends and drinking at a night club off of East 12th street.

Apparently Campbell became angry with Kirkland for checking out another woman [the mother of his child] at the night club. Campbell, who felt disrespected, asked Kirkland to step outside of the night club and the two of them would proceed to argue. They exchanged words and left together in a car to go home.

During the car ride, they once started arguing and Campbell tells police that Kirkland allegedly grabbed her by the neck. Campbell, who was driving, pulled over in the parking lot of a local CVS Pharmacy and the alleged physical confrontation continued. She told police that Kirkland once again grabbed her by the neck. In order to calm him down, Campbell says she was forced to apologize.

Once the second argument finished and they went home, Campbell ran upstairs in fear of further violence and called the police. Upon arriving to her house, the police were told by Campbell that Kirkland caused pain and discomfort, but he did not strangle her hard enough to cut off the path of air.

Police found a 5-6 inch scratch to the front of her neck and finger nail/finger prints on the back, left and right side of her neck.

Kirkland is still involved in an ongoing legal battle to break his promotional contract with Golden Boy Promotions and his managerial agreement with Cameron Dunkin/Michael Miller. He was last seen in the ring in March 2012, winning by way of a controversial disqualification over Carlos Molina.

In 2009, Kirkland was arrested on a widely reported firearm charge. He was sent to prison and released in September of 2010.
