Through their relentless training regiments came a weigh-in free of drama as both boxers are set for their super featherweight title fight Saturday evening. Ito checked in at a fighting fit pounds in defense of his title. The always-chiseled Herring—a decorated U.S. Marine who served two tours in Iraq and was captain of the 2012 U.S. Olympic boxing team—showed up at a career-lightest 129.6 pounds.

The Cancun, Mexico native faces Francisco "Bandido" Vargas (25-1-2) in Tucson, Arizona in a rematch of their January, 2017 fight that Berchelt won via 11th round knockout. The fight was very close on the scorecards at the time of the stoppage with judge having the bout even. The fight tops an ESPN doubleheader that also includes WBO super bantamweight champion Emanuel Navarrete facing Isaac Dogboe in an immediate rematch of their December fight that Navarrete won via unanimous decision.

Ito, who recently signed a long-term co-promotional contract with Top Rank, will defend his title against 2012 U.S. Olympic boxing team captain and U.S Marine Corps veteran Jamel “Semper Fi” Herring Saturday, May 25 at Osceola Heritage Park. The 2012 U.S. Olympic boxing team captain and decorated two-tour Iraqi war veteran with the U.S. Marines has cracked the Top 15 in the most recent edition of the World Boxing Organization super featherweight rankings. In being inserted at number 11, Herring is finally eligible to challenge for the 130-pound title currently held by Masayuki Ito.

Jamel Herring knew he was taking a big risk in entering the free agent market after allowing his five-year contract with adviser Al Haymon expire to close out 2017. The reward for that gamble has finally arrived for the fighting Marine. Terms have long ago been reached for Herring to challenge reigning 130-pound titlist Masayuki Ito, despite the title fight having yet to be formally announced. The delay was due to a location being sought, but BoxingScene.com has learned that a deal is close to air the May 25 ESPN telecast live from Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base in Southern California.
