He’s saying mostly all the right things in the lead-up to his Thursday bout with Jamaine Ortiz, the family drama that has often dominated pre-fight headlines in the past is absent, at least publicly, and with his short-lived retirement a thing of the past, he can finally move forward with his career.

By Keith Idec - Jamaine Ortiz didn’t think Teofimo Lopez would beat Josh Taylor. Ortiz expected the Scottish southpaw to retain his WBO junior welterweight title when he opposed Lopez on June 10 in The Theater at Madison Square Garden, the same New York venue where Ortiz tested Vasiliy Lomachenko seven months earlier. Taylor entered the ring a 2-1 favorite that night, but Lopez’s upset established the former unified lightweight champion as the top champion in the 140-pound division, according to Ortiz.

Jamaine Ortiz is ready to settle unfinished business on the biggest stage of his career. Ortiz will challenge WBO junior welterweight world champion Teofimo Lopez on Thursday, Feb. 8 at Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
Teofimo Lopez is well aware of the challenges Jamaine Ortiz could present when they fight February 8 in Las Vegas. Lopez and Ortiz have history from the time when these contemporaries were accomplished amateurs. The WBO junior welterweight champion knows Ortiz has the additional motivation during training camp to avenge his points loss to Lopez nearly nine years ago in an important amateur match.
Teofimo Lopez is a bit more brazen than most. When he first popped onto the scene, he loudly shouted about his greatness. He also claimed that Vasiliy Lomachenko would be dismantled and beaten if they ever stood across the ring from one another. Once he was given his chance, he proved that he wasn’t simply bloviating, as he went on to beat Lomachenko in 2020.
