Jack Catterall: record, next fight and profile →
Probellum has announced the promotional signing of super lightweight contender Jack Catterall. Catterall is coming off a controversial decision loss to undisputed champion Josh Taylor last month in Glasgow, after two of the ringside judges ruled against him in a decision that shocked a lot of observers in the boxing world.
Former unified junior welterweight champion Regis Prograis is only a few days away from his scheduled return in Dubai. Prograis, 33-years-old, faces Ireland’s Tyrone McKenna in the co-main event on the second of two Probellum shows this weekend at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium.
From Michael Conlan’s vantagepoint, Jack Catterall clearly beat Josh Taylor on February 26 in Glasgow. As much as Conlan feels for Catterall, who lost a split decision to the undefeated, fully unified 140-pound champion in Taylor’s home country of Scotland, the Irish contender considers the controversy caused by the official result of their bout to be beneficial to him as he prepares to enter the ring in a defending champion’s hometown Saturday night.
Ian John-Lewis has been downgraded by the British Boxing Board of Control in the wake of the controversial Josh Taylor-Jack Catterall fight, a decision that is likely to affect his chances of refereeing or judging a world title fight in the future. Outrage followed Catterall’s split decision loss to Taylor for the undisputed world super-lightweight title on February 26. Lindsay Hoyle, the speaker of the House of Commons who is also Catterall’s local MP, even referred the matter to the police.
Josh Taylor has at least one more fight to worry about, should he even choose to retain his current championship status. An overdue mandatory title fight ordered by the WBA calls for Scotland’s Taylor, the reigning undisputed lineal/WBA/WBC/IBF/WBO junior welterweight champion—to next face number-one contender Alberto Puello. The fight was formally ordered March 8, with the two sides given a 30-day negotiation period to reach a deal to avoid a purse bid hearing. The ruling is significant in that it limits Taylor’s options in the event he decides to stick around at junior welterweight after having recently vowed to be done with the division.
Amidst the ongoing investigation surrounding the widely criticized outcome in the Josh Taylor-Jack Catterall junior welterweight championship fight is the question of why two of the judges were there at all.
Even after a close review, trainer Ben Davison simply can’t see how his charge, Josh Taylor, got away with a “highway robbery”, as some have called Taylor's recent controversial points win over Jack Catterall.
Undisputed junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor is willing to have a rematch with Jack Catterall - but maintains the position that it can't happen at 140pounds.
Trainer Shane McGuigan couldn’t help but feel like a disappointed parent watching his former charge Josh Taylor pick up a controversial decision the other night.
Bob Arum can’t quite pinpoint what went wrong for Josh Taylor on Saturday night in Glasgow. Maybe, as Taylor indicated, he applied too much pressure on himself while preparing for a huge event in his home country. Perhaps, too, Jack Catterall was better than even Taylor, who touted Catterall’s skills before their fight, expected during their 12-round, 140-pound title fight at The OVO Hydro.
