Hughie Fury will be back in the ring sooner rather than later after getting back to winning ways.

The heavyweight was in action at the Manchester Arena on Saturday night for the first time since last August.

Fury lost on points at the hands of Alexander Povetkin at the O2 Arena in London but was back against Pavel Sour.

The fight came on the undercard of Scott Quigg’s super-featherweight crunch clash against Jono Carroll and had been scheduled for 10 rounds.

Fury had said that he was hoping for an early night, promising that it “wouldn’t go the distance” and that we would “see something different” from him in his first fight back since his third professional defeat.

The two were meant to meet in Monaco last November before illness prevented Fury, who at times attempted to be silky, switch-hit and box southpaw, from taking part on the fight.

And the rescheduled clash was a rather forgettable affair until the end of round two when a combination from Fury placed Sour on the seat of his pants and forced him into taking the mandatory eight count from referee Steve Gray.

Fury continued in the same vein in the third round and another barrage once again saw Sour floored.

The referee Gray waved the fight off at 24 seconds of the third round but the towel had already come in from the Czech’s team.

“I got a win but the performance was there,” said the 25-year-old afterwards. “I’ve been working on boxing southpaw and I’m naturally left-handed but I’ve been getting my shots off better and it’s all down to my Dad. He’s the mastermind in the camp and I’m so happy that it’s finally coming together.”

And Fury, who moved on to 24-3 with 14 quick with the win, will be back in the not-too-distant future.

His promoter, Eddie Hearn, revealed in the aftermath that Fury will be back in the ring on May 23 at the O2 Arena in London.

Boxing Scene was under the impression that Hearn would place Fury in a title fight on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s IBF, WBA Super, IBO and WBO world heavyweight title defences against Kubrat Pulev on June 20 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

But it’ll be May 23 at the O2 Arena, which will be confirmed in the coming days as the date and venue for Oleksandr Usyk vs. Dereck Chisora in a heavyweight showdown, when Fury comes back.

It’s understood a press conference is scheduled for Friday in the capital to confirm the fight between Usyk, who is the WBO’s mandatory challenger to the aforementioned Joshua, and former British, Commonwealth and European heavyweight champion Chisora.
