Future hall of famer, former champion and Golden Boy Promotions stakeholder, Bernard Hopkins, has no problem with Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26KOs) selecting Andre Berto as the final opponent of his pro career.
Mayweather has been attacked by the fans, and most writers, for picking Berto - viewed as a humongous underdog. Berto, although a former WBC/IBF welterweight champion, is 3-3 in his last six fights, and two of the opponents who defeated him - Robert Guerrero and Victor Ortiz - were already soundly beaten by Mayweather.
After 19 years in the sport, and five divisional titles, Hopkins strongly believes Mayweather has earned the right to leave the sport on his terms.
The problem is, there are very few in the industry who actually expect Mayweather to retire. Even some of his strongest supporters are expecting him to fight at least one more time.
"I think Floyd Mayweather at 37, 38-years-old has earned the right to go out - if this is his last one - earned the right to go out the way he wants to go out. He earned it, beat everyone that was put in front of him. He still has an '0' - something that most fighters don't have who have been in the business as long as he's been in the business," Hopkins explained to BoxingScene.com.
"When you look at record breaking numbers, record breaking paydays - no matter if you're on this side or that side - you can't be a hater and [bash him on] whoever he fights, and he has the luxury to do that - that would be giving the man a disservice, disrespecting his business."
Mayweather-Berto takes place on September 12th from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Showtime Pay-Per-View will carry the event.
