Hector Garcia Drops, Shocks Chris Colbert To Win Decision in WBA Eliminator

•Feb 27, 2022

Hector Garcia capitalized on the opportunity of his lifetime Saturday night. The largely unknown underdog overwhelmed heavily favored 130-pound contender Chris Colbert en route to beating up the brash Brooklyn native and winning a 12-round unanimous decision in Showtime’s main event from The Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Colbert (16-1, 6 KOs) never dealt well with the Dominican southpaw’s pressure or body punching.

Chris Colbert figured he wouldn’t fight February 26 once he learned last week that Roger Gutierrez contracted COVID-19. The brash Brooklyn native is thus thankful Hector Luis Garcia replaced Gutierrez on barely two weeks’ notice. Otherwise, not only would Colbert have been denied his shot at Gutierrez’s WBA world super featherweight title, he would’ve wasted a lot of time and money on a training camp he had almost completed.

Hector Garcia had no difficulty making weight Friday for a fight he took on relatively short notice. The Dominican southpaw stepped on the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s scale at 129½ pounds for his 12-round, 130-pound fight against former WBA interim super featherweight champ Chris Colbert on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Brooklyn’s Colbert was a little lighter, 128¾ pounds, when it was his turn to weigh in at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

Hector Garcia will enter the ring Saturday night in Las Vegas as an unknown underdog. Based on what he has seen, however, the undefeated Dominican southpaw suspects that Chris Colbert won’t serve as quite the steep step up in class most fans and media consider Colbert for him. Garcia, who works with respected Cuban trainer Ismael Salas, stayed in the gym and remained in shape, thus he wasn’t concerned about taking their 12-round, 130-pound fight on 2½ weeks’ notice.
