This past May, Matchroom Sport’s Managing Director Eddie Hearn made a splash on the United States boxing scene when he announced that he had finalized a partnership with streaming service DAZN - which is an 8 year deal that is reportedly worth $1 billion dollars.
Although he hasn’t made the splash that everyone expected, in failing to sign marquee fighters, he has signed a stable of solid boxers to his Matchroom USA outfit.
It’s not like Hearn hasn’t tried to get the big names. He has made offers to plenty of fighters and a lot of them are aligned with super manager Al Haymon. None of those names have bitten yet.
Hearn does have a very powerful piece in his war chest - and that is unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (21-0, 20 KO’s), who some would argue is the biggest star in boxing.
And Hearn recently signed up several world champions like Maurice Hooker, Artur Beterbiev, Danny Roman and Tevin Farmer.
“We have the biggest fighter in the world on DAZN in Anthony Joshua so we haven’t done bad to start with,” Hearn told BoxingScene.com.
"We have multiple world champions. We have Maurice Hooker, we have Artur Beterbiev, Maurice Hooker, Danny Roman, Katie Taylor, and Tevin Farmer
Hearn believes the pieces will start to fall into place for him in the future."
“Yes, we want those flagship US fighters, trust me they will come because at the moment, everyone is holding on for dear live promising 3 or 4 fights a year and [promising to] give them this amount of money. They won’t do that and when the fighters realize that - they’re going to come back to us.”
In a recent report on BoxingScene, it was reported that Hearn held a very positive meeting with Manny Pacquiao's team members last month in Boston. Hearn is very interested in working something out to bring Pacquiao to DAZN.
