This past Saturday night, Ryan Garcia continued his unbeaten run with a five round destruction of former world champion Javier Fortuna.
Following the win, Garcia called for a showdown with another unbeaten star, Gervonta "Tank" Davis.
However, there are many issues that would have to be solved in order to make such a fight.
Garcia is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, who have an exclusive content deal with streaming service DAZN. On the other side, Davis is tied to Premier Boxing Champions, who have content deals with Showtime and Fox Sports.
Showtime is primarily the broadcaster of Davis' bouts - and while they are very interested in making that fight, they have no interest in having a joint pay-per-view event with DAZN. And Golden Boy has no interest in making the fight without the involvement of DAZN.
Promoter Eddie Hearn, who also has an exclusive content deal with DAZN, would like to see the fight with Davis take place.
"[Ryan Garcia vs. Gervonta Davis] is a massive fight," Hearn said on The DAZN Boxing Show. "It's two different fan bases. It's just such a great mix of styles, of personalities, narrative. I hope those guys can get it made. I really do. I think Ryan will take that fight. I don't see why Gervonta Davis wouldn't want to take that fight. I'm sure he thinks he beats Ryan Garcia convincingly. So hopefully, everyone involved can make that happen."
And now there's the issue of the weight.
The bout with Fortuna was held at the junior welterweight limit of 140-pounds. According to Garcia, he has no intention of returning to the lightweight limit.
Davis competed once at 140, back in 2021, with a stoppage of Mario Barrios. Following that win, he moved down to 135.
Garcia has a large frame and it's unlikely Davis' handlers would provide him with a weight advantage by agreeing to fight at 140. A catch-weight is likely needed.
"I think we all know realistically, Tank probably makes 135 quite comfortably if he does it properly," Hearn said. "I don't think it really matters. I mean, you're getting to a stage now where some of those fights, belts are irrelevant. And actually, Tank against Ryan Garcia, I don't care if it's at 136, 7,8, 9, 40. Like whatever. It's just a really good fight. I don't see why that fight shouldn't be made."
