As reported earlier, IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24KOs) says he is dead serious about fighting IBO/WBA/IBF middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs).
Brook defends his world title on Saturday night against IBF mandatory challenger Kevin Bizier in Sheffield.
Golovkin is back on April 23rd, also against an IBF mandatory challenger, when he faces Dominic Wade at The Forum in Los Angeles, California.
If Brook faces Golovkin, he would be willing to do it at a catch-weight of 157-pounds.
Brook has already approached his promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport, and told him to secure a fight with Golovkin.
"I told Eddie [that I want to fight Golovkin]. People don't believe me. They think that I avoid fighters, but it shows you what cojones I've got. I want to fight Golovkin. Sugar Ray Leonard went up there and boxed Hagler. And Mayweather started at super featherweight and he boxed big guys. If you've got all the skills, they pay the bills. Im ot scare of any fighter out there," Brook told BoxingScene.com's Declan Taylor.
Brook wants to emulate his domestic rival, Amir Khan, who announced last month that he was rising from welterweight to a catch-weight of 155-pounds to challenge Canelo on May 7th at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Hearn told BoxingScene that Golovkin's promoter, Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, told him that his fighter will likely not come down below the middleweight limit of 160-pounds.
"What happened was, when we got the news about Canelo [fighting Khan], Tom Loeffler sent me an email saying 'I can't believe Khan is fighting Canelo.' I went and spoke to Kell straight after, and he said 'you know what to do, get me the big fights.' And he said about six or seven names and Golovkin was one of them.," Hearn told BoxingScene.com.
"I just said to Tom Loeffler that Kell would fight Golovkin at 156, 157-pounds. And he said 'well, I don't know if we'll go below 160.' And I said 'well I'm telling you, I mean it, he will do it.' I think they have plans to stay at 160, but Kell will fight him."
