Former two-time heavyweight champion John Ruiz is back in the saddle. He is the mandatory challenger to the new WBA heavyweight champion David Haye. The fight will take place in the early part of 2010. Haye will need some time to heal his right hand, injured last Saturday in Germany during the title-winning effort over the 7’2 Nikolai Valuev.
“First thing is, I was very surprised that he got a decision over here. I'm happy there were fair judges and I'm happy that he came out with the win. I'm happy to see a new face in the future,” Ruiz told BoxingScene.com’s Thomas Schlabe.
Ruiz has no issues with fighting Haye in London, England. He fought in England in the past and believes that he will get better shake in England than he did in some of his bouts that were held in Germany.
“I fought in London. I fought there six times. They are pretty good over there. The English fans were always good to me. I look forward to coming back. There is no such thing as an easy fight because every heavyweight comes to fight. David Haye is a mover so I have to think about [the strategy],” Ruiz said. “From what I saw [against Valuev] he moved around. He did what he had to do. He had to make that big guy move around, stuck to his gameplan and came out with the decision.”
