At the Freizeit Arena in Sölden, Austria, Eduard Gutknecht (18-0, 7 KOs) won a twelve round split decision over former WBO super middleweight champion Karoly Balzsay (21-2, 15 KOs). The scores were 115-113 and 116-112 for Gutknecht and 116-113 for Balzsay.
After quite an undefeated run, Balzsay suffered the first loss of his career when he was upset in August by Robert Steiglitz, who stopped him in eleven rounds. The fight with Gutknecht, the WBO's inter-continental super middleweight champ, was going to be used as a tool to land a shot at the winner of Steiglitz's January clash with Edison Miranda. After suffering the second consecutive loss of his career, Balzsay has a lot to think about.
