Guillermo Rigondeaux: record, next fight and profile →
WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (17-0, 11 KOs) is sitting back and waiting for an answer on whether of not WBO super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko (8-1, 6 KOs) is willing to fight him. If the right terms are put together, Rigondeaux is ready to make an eight pound jump to fight Lomachenko at 130-pounds.
WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo "El Chacal" Rigondeaux (17-0, 11 KOs) is very interested in unification bouts. The 36-year-old appeared to fulfill his mandatory obligation when he blasted out Moises Flores in the first round of their fight two weeks in Las Vegas on the Andre Ward-Sergey Kovalev undercard.
Dino Duva didn’t use the “F” word. Then again, it wasn’t really necessary. Duva, an executive for Roc Nation Sports (Rigondeaux’s promoter), made it perfectly clear Monday that the handlers for Guillermo Rigondeaux believe Moises Flores was faking June 17 in Las Vegas.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission voted unanimously during a Monday morning meeting to change the result of the Guillermo Rigondeaux-Moises Flores fight to a no-contest. Rigondeaux originally was declared a winner by first-round knockout June 17 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The NSAC changed the result to a no-contest because video and audio evidence proved Rigondeaux’s fight-ending left hand clearly landed after the bell sounded to end the first round.
Its not clear if WBO super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko (8-1, 6 KOs) and WBA super bantamweight titlist Guillermo Rigondeaux (18-0, 12 KOs) will ever meet inside the ring, but their representatives are certainly not afraid to spar verbally.
Alex Bornote, co-manager of WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (18-0, 12 KOs), says he is "calling the bluff" of Egis Klimas, manager of WBO super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko (8-1, 6 KOs).
Over the past couple of years a fight between two-time Olympic gold medalists Vasyl Lomachenko (8-1) and Guillermo Rigondeaux (18-0) has been discussed. The 36-year-old Rigondeaux has had a tough time securing fights since his 2013 victory over Nonito Donaire.
Suddenly there is a lot of chatter of a fight between WBO super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko (8-1, 6 KOs) and WBA super bantamweight titlist, Guillermo Rigondeaux (18-0, 12 KOs), with Lomachenko needing an opponent for the late summer.
Light Heavyweight: Despite several results of note, there isn’t any change in the ratings at light heavyweight for the moment. Lineal champion Adonis Stevenson and the perceived champion to most of the world, Andre Ward, won big in their last outings. A showdown between the two would allow for a rare four-belt unification in the class but Stevenson has a tough mandatory against Eleider Alvarez waiting for him.
While you naturally have to afford Andre Ward huge credit for now twice toppling the previously formidable force of Sergey Kovalev, it remains the case that he hasn’t quite put the matter to bed. I suspect a third meeting between the pair is inevitable because, once again, the finish wasn’t clear cut and there was an air of controversy wafting around the Mandalay Bay hotel on Saturday night.
