Abel Sanchez, trainer of WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27KOs), wants his boxer to unify with WBC king Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs). Last Saturday night, Golovkin headlined in the big room at New York's Madison Square Garden, where he stopped Daniel Geale in three rounds.
MSG is Cotto's second home in the United States. The Puerto Rican star draw records crowds of over 20,000 fans to his fights. That's why Sanchez believes a fight with Cotto, to decide which boxer is the best at middleweight, is the perfect contest for MSG.
Sanchez frowned at recent reports that Cotto may choose defend his title against Timothy Bradley or Saul Alvarez at a catch-weight. If Cotto wants to face fighters from the lower weight divisions, then Sanchez believes the Puerto Rican star should release his grasp of the WBC title and return to the lower weights.
"I want Cotto here in the Garden. If he calls himself the linear 160-pound champion, then he should fight a 160-pounder. If not, then vacate the title and go somewhere else - go back to 154. I think the public deserves that...the boxers, the organization deserve to have one champion...one 160-pound champion. Hopefully we can unify, but Cotto is the one who is most viable at the Garden," Sanchez told BoxingScene.com.
