As previously reported, World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman revealed the special blue belt commemorating WBC founder and Mexican President Adolfo Lopez Mateos, which was created for the dates May 5 and September 16 with the motto "Bats'il Ajaw Belt" which means "True Hero," for the winners of the headline bouts on those dates.
This unique masterpiece, designed by highly skilled and dedicated artisans from Chiapas, will be awarded to the winner of the May 5th fight between WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and challenger Vanes Martirosyan.
Champion and challenger, soon had the airwaves veritably crackling, via party line telephone calls from their respective camps.
Golovkin who was first up, stressed it`s a tremendous pride for him to be able to fight on such important dates for Mexico, a country he considers his second home.
"My plan was to face Saul. However, we all know the story. Today I can assure you that I am ready to face Martirosyan and most definitely to take the Tzeltal belt home. I already have the Huichol belt and now this jewel will join it. My body and my heart says I will respect it. This is a very great honour for me," Golovkin said.
"Vanes is a great fighter and I am sure that he will reach this commitment with all the intention of coming out with the victory, on May 5 there will be an authentic war with the purest Mexican style.
"My intention is to fight three times a year, so if Saul is ready for September, then we will give the audience that fight. For now I am completely focused on this particular commitment."
Martirosyan was thrilled to be able to chat with the WBC leader and with the Mexican press.
"The first thing I want to do, is to thank the team of GGG and the WBC for giving me the opportunity and to realize this dream of fighting for the most important green and gold title," Vanes said.
"Since I was a child I dreamed of wearing the belt won by great legend like Julio César Chávez, who`s one of my greatest idols.
"I have been a boxer for 17 years and although I have not had any activity in the ring for two years, I have never stopped training. I'm aware that I am not going to be the favorite, but believe I will spring a surprise, when fighting in the purest Mexican style. I`m going to defeat Gennady Golovkin with Mexican style! Viva Mexico!"
