If Gennady Golovkin defeats Dominic Wade and one of his preferred middleweight options doesn’t work out, Golovkin’s promoter is willing to make a fight against WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto Ramirez.

Tom Loeffler, managing director of K2 Promotions, didn’t specify the weight at which Golovkin would meet Ramirez. The 24-year-old Ramirez (34-0, 24 KOs), fresh off an impressive performance against Arthur Abraham (44-5, 29 KOs) in a 168-pound title fight April 9 in Las Vegas, hasn’t weighed in at the middleweight limit of 160 pounds in 3½ years, though.

Nevertheless, if Golovkin can’t lure Canelo Alvarez into the middleweight title fight most boxing fans want to see and fellow middleweight title-holders continue avoiding Golovkin, Loeffler considers the 6-foot-2½ southpaw an attractive alternative for the 5-10 Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs).

“I think Gilberto looked great,” Loeffler said during a recent conference call regarding Ramirez’s unanimous-decision defeat of Abraham. “Whenever a young fighter like that can dominate an established champion like Arthur Abraham, who’s been a champion for so long at 168, you have to give Ramirez a lot of credit and a lot of respect. That would certainly be a fight that down the road that could make a lot of sense for Gennady. [Promoter] Bob [Arum] had reached out to see if we would have interest. I definitely responded that we would have interest in that fight.”

Loeffler would prefer a much more lucrative fight against Alvarez, assuming Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) defeats huge underdog Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) on May 7 in Las Vegas and the heavily favored Golovkin beats Wade (18-0, 12 KOs) on Saturday night at The Forum in Inglewood, California (HBO; 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT).

“It really depends,” Loeffler said. “The first priority is Dominic Wade. The second priority is to get the mandatory against the winner of Canelo-Khan. The third priority would be to try to unify with the WBO champion, Billy Joe Saunders. But certainly, if those other opportunities don’t materialize, then Ramirez would be one of the biggest fights that Gennady could be in.”
