Golden Boy Promotions: record, next fight and profile →
Originally Golden Boy Promotions had planned on being in Las Vegas this week where the rematch between Saul Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin was scheduled for the T-Mobile Arena on May 5th. But that event was scrapped a few weeks ago as Alvarez was suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission for six months for testing positive for clenbuterol.
For the ninth year, B. Riley FBR, Inc. will present the annual "Big Fighters, Big Cause" Charity Boxing Night on Wednesday, May 23 at Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel. Actor and comedian Bill Bellamy will return as host of the star-studded exclusive event that will feature first-class entertainment, four action-packed live fights presented by Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, and a live & silent auction display featuring iconic memorabilia and one-of-a-kind items and experiences.
There is a lot of confusion going on when it comes to the super featherweight title of the World Boxing Association. Jezreel Corrales was the WBA 'super' champion at 130-pounds. Last October, he was knocked out in the eight round by Alberto Machado to capture that world title at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
As BoxingScene.com reported earlier, Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) has been temporarily suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, in connection to his failed drug tests from February, where the boxer came up positive for traces of clenbuterol in samples taken on February 17 and February 20.
The formal announcement went out on Wednesday morning that WBA lightweight titlist Jorge Linares will be facing two-division champion, Vasyl Lomachenko, on May 12th at New York's Madison Square Garden, as the headline bout of a card that will be televised by ESPN. The deal which was actually finalized last week didn't come without obstacles.
Earlier today, unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin made several inflammatory statements with respect to his upcoming opponent, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. The two two fighters are scheduled to collide in a rematch on May 5th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
It appears that former world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa and Golden Boy Promotions have parted ways. Gamboa's release was leaked to the Cuban press, but Golden Boy confirmed that Cuban wanted his release and his request was granted. The 36 year old Gamboa (28-2, 17 KOs), who also won an Olympic gold medal, signed on with Golden Boy in January of 2017.
So this much is clear: Vasyl Lomachenko will be performing at the Madison Square Garden on May 12th. The question is whether Top Rank has moved on from trying to get WBA lightweight titlist, Jorge Linares, as the dance partner.
Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum is still very annoyed with the fallout of the lightweight bout between Vasyl Lomachenko and WBA world champion Jorge Linares. Arum has an ESPN televised date of May 12, from New York's Madison Square Garden, penciled in for Lomachenko's debut at 135-pounds.
Golden Boy Promotions President Eric Gomez does not believe that a potential bout between WBA lightweight titlist Jorge Linares and two-time Olympic gold medal winner Vasyl Lomachenko is completely dead. Right now there is a stalemate between Golden Boy and Top Rank over the May 12th date, which is what Top Rank has slotted for this bout on ESPN.
