Philippine super flyweight champion 23-year-old Jonas Sultan has lost a unanimous ten round decision against 35 year old Go Onaga in Okinawa.
Ranked No. 11 by the IBF the hard-punching southpaw Onaga overcame the No. 4 ranked Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation contender Sultan, winning comfortably on the scorecards of all three judges – 99-92, 98-93 and 97-94 to improve his record to 26-2-2 with 18 knockouts while Sultan who won the Philippine title with a unanimous twelve round decision over Rene Dacquel last July 11, dropped to 23-9-3 with 5 knockouts.
Hall of Fame media man Joe Koizumi reported that Onaga, unbeaten in the last three years is gunning for an OPBF title shot and is likely to be ranked at No.1 after what Koizumi described as “his good victory over Sultan who fought well but was outclassed and out-legged by the taller and quicker Onaga.”
Promoter and former WBA light welterweight champion Akinobu Hiranaka who just celebrated his 50th birthday indicated he plans to promote an OPBF or Japanese title fight in March and a world title fight sometime in October.
