Gilberto Ramirez: record, next fight and profile →

Three retired world champions believe that David Benavidez should resist the temptation to move up to cruiserweight.

Despite a painful loss to Gilberto "Zurdo" Ramirez, Chris Billam-Smith wants to fight on.

Gilberto Ramirez has unified two world titles at cruiserweight, but he has an obligation to take care of before he can go for a third.

Chris Billam-Smith has spoken of his disappointment at losing his WBO cruiserweight title to Gilberto Ramirez, but praised his opponent for his class.

Gilberto Ramirez is now the unified cruiserweight champion after adding Chris Billam-Smith’s WBO belt to his own WBA title. Ramirez won a rough and hard-fought 12-round decision at The Venue, Riyadh, as the bill-topper for Latino Night by scores of 116-112 (twice) and 116-113 and, frankly, Ramirez boxed superbly.

Despite a combined 68 professional fights, and a world title apiece, cruiserweights Chris Billam-Smith and Gilberto Ramirez would be forgiven for feeling a little uncertain and perhaps uneasy about what lies ahead on Saturday night.

Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez knows what’s at stake this Saturday night. “I’ve prepared for war and will leave everything I have in the ring,” the WBA cruiserweight champion said of his unification bout against WBO titleholder Chris “The Gentleman” Billam-Smith. “Chris has all my respect. He’s tough, and he brings his best every time.”

Shane McGuigan has told Chris Billam-Smith of the importance of convincing the judges throughout Saturday’s fight with Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez.
