George Kambosos: record, next fight and profile →

At age 36, three-division champion Vasiliy Lomachenko was supposed to be slipping toward the exit. Instead, on Sunday in Australia, he dominated George Kambosos Jr. and re-entered his name among an elite group.

In Thursday’s episode of “Deep Waters” on ProBox TV, analyst Shawn Porter offers a snapshot of Sunday’s matchup between former three-division titleholder Vasiliy Lomachenko and George Kambosos Jr. in Perth, Australia. Porter believes range is the key for Lomachenko, 36, whom he says still has the explosive ability and sharp counterpunching style to compete at the highest level.

The last time Ukraine’s Vasiliy Lomachenko won a world title fight was in the summer of 2019 when he turned back the spirited challenge of Luke Campbell in London. Coincidentally or not, it was also the last time he chose to wear the blue and yellow colours of his country’s flag on his shorts and gloves.

All of the championship fighters have made weight in Perth, Western Australia head of Sunday’s Top Rank bill, with headliners Vasiliy Lomachenko and vacant IBF lightweight title co-challenger George Kambosos both came in under the 135lbs limit.

In Thursday’s episode of “Deep Waters” on ProBox TV, analyst Shawn Porter compares the profiles of 36-year-old former three-division titleholder Vasiliy Lomachenko to that of 33-year-old Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Porter says, despite recent talk of Lomachenko’s decline, that the Ukrainian lightweight “still has what it takes to become a champion.” He also has a favorite matchup he would like to see for Lomachenko, who will first fight George Kambosos Jr. in Perth, Australia, on Sunday.

Due to the forecast of rain, the public workouts ahead of Vasiliy Lomachenko’s vacant IBF lightweight title fight with George Kambosos were moved indoors, and as the final stages of the build-up ticked by, the fighters shared as astonishingly long-face off, that lasted more than three minutes and endured through the attempted intervention of heavyweight Lucas Browne.

Maxi Hughes believes that George Kambosos Jr has to “throw caution to the wind” and fight like Orlando Salido to stand any chance of victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko

Vasiliy Lomachenko doesn’t need to do this, continuing this pursuit to recapture another belt as a lightweight champion.
