Gennady Golovkin: record, next fight and profile →
It was fun at first. The chance to face a fighter as great as Terence Crawford? For Canelo Alvarez, he sat back and fantasized about it before shaking his head and snapping back to reality.
Chris Eubank Jr. is as keen as ever on a fight with Gennadiy Golovkin. England’s Eubank seemingly revived his career earlier this month when he stopped Liam Smith in 10 rounds in their middleweight rematch in Manchester, only nine months after Eubank suffered a humiliating technical knockout loss to Smith in their first fight at the same venue.
Middleweight contender Chris Eubank Jr. is looking ahead to several potential fights in the immediate future. Eubank is back on the map after Saturday's dominating stoppage of Liam Smith in their rematch in Manchester. The victory saved Eubank's career.
Super middleweight contender John Ryder is still hoping to secure a fight with former world champion Gennadiy Golovkin. The 41-year-old Golovkin has been out of the ring since losing a twelve round decision in his trilogy fight with undisputed super middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in September of last year.
John Ryder has been told that if Gennady Golovkin opts to box again then he will be first in line for the fight. Ryder turned 35 on Wednesday and his birthday celebrations consisted of a session in the gym with Tony Sims and some dinner at home with his young family.
Over the years, Gennadiy Golovkin’s ring appearance has waned. From fighting three or four times annually to making a short cameo every other year, Golovkin simply hasn’t kept an active schedule. Abel Sanchez, his former head trainer, has also noticed that Golovkin has spent more and more time on the sidelines. Although the two aren’t as close as they once were, Sanchez gives his conjecture on why Golovkin has remained out of the public eye.
John Ryder wants to keep his competition at a high level following a unanimous decision defeat against Canelo Alvarez. The 34-year-old British southpaw Ryder (32-6, 18 KOs) has named Gennadiy Golovkin, Jaime Munguia, and Edgar Berlanga as the set of desired opponents he’d prefer to face.
By Corey Erdman - The public perception of Edgar Berlanga has varied quite a bit over the course of his young career. Like many fighters of his era, his entire professional career has been broadcast, from early days on CBS Sports Network to an extended stint on ESPN to a new home on DAZN, allowing a global audience to have a fluctuating opinion of him from the time he began to present day. More so than most, Berlanga has benefitted financially from the results of, and the reaction to, those early days.
Even the biggest fans of Gennadiy Golovkin are clueless as to what’s going on. In September of 2022, the former Olympic silver medalist attempted to even the score with Canelo Alvarez. But after coming short, the former unified champ at 160 pounds has seemingly crawled underneath a rock and ostensibly disappeared.
Gennadiy Golovkin has officially vacated the only world title left around his waist - the IBO middleweight belt. At 41-years-old, Golovkin's future in the sport is unknown.
