Genaro Camargo Steps Up To Face Francisco Vargas

By Francisco Salazar

Junior lightweight Francisco Vargas will fight Genaro Camargo at the Salon Las Palmas in Pesqueria, Nuevo Leon, Mexico on Saturday night, manager Joel De La Hoya confirmed to Boxingscene.com on Monday night.

The fight will be a stay-busy eight round bout for Vargas, who has had a breakout year in 2014.

Vargas (20-0-1, 14 KOs) won a 10 round unanimous decision over Abner Cotto on March 8 and impressively won by technical knockout over Juan Manuel Lopez on July 12.

The 29-year-old Mexican Olympian is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions.

Camargo (44-17, 34 KOs) was knocked out in his last bout on September 27 at the hands of Romulo Koasicha. His most impressive win was two years ago, when he stopped Ruben Tamayo in the fifth round. Tamayo will challenge Jesus Cuellar for his world title belt next Saturday.

The fight card on Saturday will be co-promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo Promotions.

In the 12 round main event, flyweight Armando Santos (14-3-1, 8 KOs) will fight John Riel Casimero (20-2, 12 KOs). Lightweight Robert Manzanarez (28-1, 24 KOs) will fight Hector Velazquez (56-23-3, 38 KOs) in a 10 round bout and super bantamweight Adan Mares (12-0-1, 3 KOs), the brother or Abner Mares, will fight Miguel Angel Gonzalez Piedras (22-6-1, 12 KOs) in an eight round bout.

Televisa will televise in Mexico and Fox Sports Deportes will broadcast in the United States.
