Eriberto "Yukka" Gejon is being eyed for a world title shot against either newly crowned WBC light flyweight champion Omar Nino Romero who scored a stunning lopsided decision over Brian Viloria last Friday or IBF champion Ulises Solis in a November 16 fight card promoted by Top Rank’s Bob Arum at the Orleans Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
Rex "Wakee" Salud, manager of Gejon and a close friend and confidant of Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao disclosed the plans by Arum to stage a Philippine-Mexico showdown two days before the rubber match between Pacquiao and legendary Mexican Erik "El Terrible" Morales also in Las Vegas.
Salud said there was nothing definite as to which title Gejon would fight for considering that Viloria’s manager Gary Gittelsohn holds the option of the new champion’s first title defense. However, Salud said Morales’ manager Fernando Beltran handles both Nino Romero and Solis and chances are good that Gejon’s title shot will materialize.
Gejon who lost a controversial ten-round technical decision to WBA minimum weight champion Yutaka Niida last September 25 is ranked No. 9 by the IBF and No. 15 by the WBC in the minimum weight division. Salud said the lanky Gejon will move up to 108 pound division for the title fight.
Nino Romero has a record of 24-2-1 with 10 knockouts while the 24 year old IBF champion Solis has a record of 22-1-2 with 16 KO’s. In his last fight on August 4 Solis was held to a majority draw by undefeated Omar Salado while on March 25 he scored a ninth round TKO over Eric Ortiz from whom Viloria won the title with a sensational first round knockout last September 10.
