Garcia-Campbell: Handlers Exploring Possibility Of Saturday Afternoon Show

One of the biggest days on the current boxing calendar could come relatively free of conflict—at least outside the ring.

Multiple sources have informed BoxingScene.com of discussed plans for the December 5 DAZN show—headlined by an lightweight clash between Ryan García and Luke Campbell—to move to an afternoon slot. Such a schedule change would relieve home viewers of on-air conflict with a Fox Sports Pay-Per-View event later that evening, topped by undefeated, unified welterweight titlist Errol Spence versus former two-division titlist Danny Garcia (no relation to Ryan).

Both events are not only on the same date, but were also officially announced on the same day—in fact within two hours of each other on October 8.

ESPN Knockout’s Fernando Barbosa was the first to reveal this development.

Since entering the U.S. marketplace, DAZN-USA traditionally runs its major shows on Saturday evening though there have been plenty of Friday events as well. The over-the-top sports streaming platform has yet to present a stateside show during the afternoon, reserving such practice for events taking place in England and other overseas markets where said shows are live in primetime.

García-Campbell would be the first such event to break new ground for DAZN, though the option remains in the exploratory phase.

The lightweight bout has been in the works for months, avoiding two separate purse bid hearings in order to finalize terms.

Campbell (20-3, 16KOs)—a 2012 Olympic Gold medalist and two-time title challenger from Hull, England—aims for his third shot at a major title, with a win in this fight getting him there as an interim title will be at stake for the contest. Victorville, California’s García (20-0, 17KOs) agreed to face the Brit after considering other avenues towards a lightweight crown.

While terms were long ago reached, securing a fight date was the long remaining hurdle. One was found, free of competition at the time until two other major platforms decided to change that dynamic.

The upcoming PPV event between Spence (26-0, 21KOs) and Danny García (36-2, 21KOs) was originally targeted for November 21 at a location to be determined. The date change came out of the blue, catching everyone—including DAZN and Golden Boy Promotions—by surprise, though necessary given the fight’s ultimate destination.

The event will take place at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys in Arlington, Texas and near Spence’s hometown of Desoto, Texas. The unbeaten southpaw headlined at the massive venue in a 12-round shutout of former four-division champion Mikey García (no relation to Ryan or Danny) atop a Fox Sports PPV event last March.

The official announcement for the forthcoming DAZN event did not include a firm location. Golden Boy Promotions has set up shop at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California, with its post-pandemic events taking place without fans in attendance.

Also potentially taking place on December 5 is the return of two-time and reigning lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (30-0-1, 21KOs). The unbeaten champ was due to face Deontay Wilder for a third time, though their planned December 19 clash seemingly will no longer take place in 2020—and perhaps not at all.

For now, England’s Fury is planning his first fight in his home country since June 2008 when he returned to the sport following a near three-year absence. The next title defense of his World championship will take place versus an opponent to be named, live on an ESPN platform from Royal Albert Hall in London.

[QUOTE=M111;20813113]People seriously underestimate Campbell. He lost a split against a prime linares who literally everybody rates. He lost against loma but went 12 and didn’t buckle - you look at loma’s first reaction at the end of that fight. He…

So what - act like you're the main event of the evening. Even comments from hardcore fans say they're intrigued by this fight and may switch off a PPV to watch. I remember when it was the weekend of Martinez-Chavez…

Campbell, Loma, Tank, Lopez easily top 4. Would love to see super six tourney at 135. It would be electric. Throw Garcia and perhaps Haney in for fun. Just amazing. It would be like the Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, Duran era…
